Default Chrome Plater Recommendation and/or Temporary Alternative

I just had a sissy bar I bent up finish welded, and I called my local chrome plating shop and they have an 8 month backlog!

So, first, does anyone recommend a chrome shop that they would ship to that has a faster turnaround (like a month or less)?

Second, if I’m going to have to get in line, what should I do with the sissy bar in the meantime? I want to run it, and I really don’t want to either coat it with something that will be hard to get off or have it look like shit all summer. I could probably polish it really well and keep it oiled. Any other ideas?

You could try Finishing Touch in Chicago (800) 403-4545. He ain't cheap but he is really good. I am not sure of his backlog though.

Thanks. I sent them an email, and got a response in less than an hour. I was told about 4 weeks, which is way better than 8 months. He’s working on the $ quote now.

you can use spray on chain lube over any raw steel to stop it rusting but can be messy if you touch it,...

I hope it’s not that high, but time is money.

Checked my receipt, was $350.00 not $500.00.

I sent him some pictures, and that's about what he quoted me, and he said he could get it done in a couple of weeks. I told him I would ship it to him this weekend. Thanks for the referral.

Carbon steel plus plating is so expensive (and chrome prone to pitting and far from durable by comparison) the cost of plating might be better spent on an argon cylinder and making another bar using stainless. Best way to buy is get three quotes if practical because steel prices vary widely even in the same area.

Chrome is fine for cheap disposable parts plated in volume but its inevitable doom begins the moment it's finished.

You should see this guys shop, one wall in the office are pictures of the high end jobs they have done, Packards, Duesenburgs, etc. As well as my sissy bar, he refinished a massively pitted door switch panel for my Grand Prix, that was tricky as hell and the end result was top notch.

Tell them Harry P said hi!

I don't think so, I lost a lot of my Pontiac pictures during a hard drive crash ( NEVER backup to a writable CD they only have a 5-10 year shelf life! ).

Let me see if I can find anything

I got my sissy bar back from Finishing Touch, and couldn't be more pleased. He made my questionable fabrication skills look great!
