Evo project
Bought an 96 evo softail that i planned to use as a start to a new build.
I dont know how its gonna look in the end but i have some ideas.
The frame gonna be hardtailed and use the stock softail axel plates from the swingarm.
It will be streetched 6" and have 38 degree rake.
Im gonna use a 2000- sportster front end with +12" tubes.
Off the shop that is gonna do the frame work for me.
(excuse my bad english)

Using the Softail axle lugs is a nice touch. There was a shop in Virginia, near me, that was doing that years ago and their hardtail conversions looked very nice.

Yes they look good and fun to re use some parts from the original bike. But those plain cnc cut axel plates are really boring so they where never an option.

Aren't you going to need the stock neck for numbers or something???

yes should retain the neck with the Harley serial number , that way you can just re-insure the bike and ride it when its finished

I live in Sweden and here you can change the neck and move the numbers to the new one. But to drive it on the road again you need to go through 3 steps, Build inspection, finished inspection and last registration inspection. So all you americans have to do is change the insurance?

No, it gets a lot more complicated than that... State laws and procedures vary, but the one thing that's across the board is that you can't tamper with or stamp new numbers. I think what Steve is saying is to weld the old neck on the frame, and that way in the eyes of the law its still the same bike. But, you evidently don't have to worry about this where you are.

So you can reapply the factory numbers to any frame you want?
Where will the 'star' punchs come from? , as part of the serial number?
That sounds far fetched.
I'd think it would compromise all of the legitimate frames and create a very unstable situation.
I would check that info as it goes against the entire worlds effort to NOT have this sort of thing going on!
lol
Best of luck.

looks great! when I hardtailed my 89 softail I couldn't believe how far the bottom rails and seat post sprung in different directions.
