Since da fenders will be off and there is nothing like a duallie for towing this could be an opportune time for a DRW conversion. I particularly like duals for towing because eight sidewalls is considerably stiffer than four. If ya don't want to buy tires right away the pickup truck world abounds in spacers. They'd certainly hook up that tasty drivetrain.

A narrow aluminum liftgate would be gloriously handy for moving stuff (I have a full width steel Tommy Gate on my F150 and if a narrow style shows up I'll grab one for muh Chevy). Before I had a liftgate I didn't think about them much but after mounting one found out they're jaw-droppingly handy and simple as a rock. They mount with four bolts so ya could do custom mounts in yer sleep. You can extend them (many use folding extensions to not block the rear view) making motorcycle retrieval very, very low effort. (Stock width fits stock Sporty-sized bikes. and the design lends itself to narrowing wide, common gates to custom width. Worth doing on at least a work truck but they're addictive and none of us is getting younger.

I can only get so erect... ^

The extra wheel weight is nice for traction with hefty engines and lightweight old style truck beds, there not being much weight on normal rears. Many owners place a sheet of steel in work truck beds to protect them but that also improves unloaded weight distribution. Healthy steel bed wall liners would keep cargo or perhaps a stray scoot from denting the bed from the inside out.

That engine could easily smoke any (reasonably normal) SRW tire.

I like that project because the specs are "strong but daily driver robustness level and depending on how many user choices you want that truck do give you it could fuck, do housework and pick up groceries while dragging home your future CNC milling center, 3D metal printing outfit, dry ice blaster and 20HP compressor for the BEV (Binder Electric Vehicle) build (now ya have solar so fuel would be cheep).

Crawl ratio is whatever ya want with electrics (full torque at zero RPM basically) so a thrifty Binder could take advantage of yer solar power.

I sent a thread link to my bro who is building a turbo'ed 6.0/4L80E for a (hard to find intact these days) 1980s C-30 single cab DRW longbed I gave him and of course he likes yer transmission mods. I'm letting him go first then I'll convert my crew cab wrecker.

Those old binders were really underrated on the capacities...My old 52 was more in the 3/4-1 ton range than the advertised 1/2 ton. Unbelievably stiff.

Out of the box many came with medium duty engines and gearboxes. Loadstar 1600 and similar from school buses also drop into most of them. International did some interesting stuff like their Scout four cylinders that IIRC used a V8 head. Not fast but near indestructible.

They made trucks when men were men and sheep were nervous.

Since he will be scouting the yards for a tranny to build ...
Tell him to stay away from the early 4L80's (1991-95) ... Those had problems with internal lubrication ..
Best years for the 4L80E is 1999-up due to factory up-grades on some internal parts ..

We're hunting later ones since we're gunning for them attached to 6.0s and harvesting the engine/transmission harnesses. I'd mostly completed a towable test stand he's finishing up for his build (I'll post pics of course).

Salvage yard and crush cycles are interesting. For example the '73-'87 are vanishing with most good ones consumed and the later gens are fading with collectors intercepting them before many scrappers. 2000s LS donors in SUV and van form are plentiful now but that will quickly fade too so best to grab what ya can including spares.

We most recently raped a van just like that and from then on we'll cut the frames for speed since van pulls otherwise suck. Our van had a Hydroboost we also harvested since they work so nicely and don't depend on engine vacuum. The seat will become my next computer chair (seats tend to be far better designed and built than furniture).

When we pulled the drivetrain I found a loose power cable to the fuse box. All fluids were perfect and the drivetrain showed signs of recent replacement so someone may have gotten pissed off and scrapped it for that. My bro is of course delighted.

The og bench seat that was in my Binder was murder on my back. Did some digging and came up with buckets out of a full size 1996 Chevy truck ...They had the lumbar air bag in em, did a bit more digging and found 6-way power for both sides ...

Ya get the best combos by mixing modern with old because you get to choose what electrical systems ya want and install everything so you can work on it.
I like the upholstery colors as they do what seats are supposed to do esthetically, set off the cab interior rather than dominate it with some gaudy logos.

Nice luck finding a 1996 driver seat that wasn't beat to shit too.

Nice! The 4L80/85 is derived from the venerable TH400, but with an overdrive gear and lockup TCC.

But you probably already knew that!

The 80s are my go to for anything that I'm putting an auto in, they're tough.

I built one for my K5. The 4L60 that came in it wasn't going to cut the mustard!!!
