Bad-Boy 92 inch 1952 Pan
Starting a new thread where I left off on the lost thread ..
Cases made it back from "Phil Long" (I was beginning to wonder) after a lengthily stay at his shop.
Here's what Phil's hand did, a New Left Side case sporting the 69-up Timken bearing was matched to the Oem 52 right side case..
Since a belt drive will go into play had Phil relocate the case breather to the right case as in the 65-up cases ..

Owner wanted the cases shot with Gloss Black Powder-coat..
A bunch of grind time will go down in order for the powder to look nice ...
Lots of chrome will pop bolted on the black cases ...
Oil pump is the og for this motor, did the works to it ..
Oem late Lifter Blocks seen the dip tanks ..
Cam Cover is a repop of a 47 Knuck, also made a trip to the tanks ..Last edited by Dragstews; 07-10-2021 at 6:44 PM.

Been so long ago I forgot .. !!
]
I see Carrillo Rods, Jim's crankpin and T&O 4-3/4" wheels ..
Special S&S Big Foot Keyed Splined Sprocket shaft ...
Pinion shaft is nothing to write home about, tis S&S but bone stock for 52 .. Does have the oil pump speed up gears ..Last edited by Dragstews; 07-10-2021 at 6:46 PM.

Now that's shiny. I like how the picture focuses on its subject and blurred the background. LOL

Hope to get around to lapping the pinion case bushing to size today ...
Might have the need to replace the case bushing with a new one cause the one in the case now is the og that the motor had .. Could be worn past max oversize bearings ... ??
Will install the Timken, set up the lap and do a few spins, then load new bearings for a test fit ...
After the bearing running fit has been accomplished, can dial in the breather timing and fit the case window to the gear window ..
That's a bit of a job to do on the 57 and back motors, but this motor will have a S&S breather gear (With a Don Hotop air ramp) which has more open timing built in. Makes for less work on the case breather window ...
The install of the "Air Ramp" requires getting rid of the blow-up arresting screen ...
Odds are in favor of dat not happening .. !!

Matched the case window to the S&S gear window ... Didn't take any meat off the open and closing sides of the case window .. Yet ..
Gotta hook up a degree wheel in order to see the timing ...
Just about ready to do the lapping ...
Brand new repop Pan jugs ...
Bored those puppies .060" oversize to get to 3.5" bore ..
The S&S Stroker Pistons allow for stock height jugs ... In turn the 92 inches are hidden, motor is a "Sleeper" !!

Compliments to you. Have read quite a few of your build threads. Very detailed they are. If I ever get my grubby hands on a pan, it would be a no brainer sending it your direction.

Good Golly, Miss Molly ....
Owner is wanting to send me a 53 Pan to do my magic on ...
Shoot ... Not even at the half way mark with the 52 at the moment ...
He wants the same gig done on the 53 ...
Not necessary in that order ...

Yeah Baby, yea ...
That NOS Hi-Po oil pump will not be going on the 52 ..
I wonder if anybody remembers this pump that hasn't been made in 30 years .. ??
Hint; Same pump that's on my 52 Pan/Shovel ..
The cast iron pump being plated will have just as good of looks as the mystery Hi-Po pump ... Nowhere close to having the same flow numbers ..
Moon eyes gauge is a must have ..

Located the top-end oil drains in the case deck ...
Can finish drilling the drains once the case is back apart .. Will be using the jug drain holes as a drill guide ..
The jugs have the drain back holes lowered ..
Pressed in a slug to block off the original holes and drilled new holes ...

Since the owner is wanting a slick powdercoat job some grind time will be spent on cleaning up and matching the cases ..
`Same goes for the lifter blocks ..
How bout that ^^ Five years into the run of the Panheads and still have leftover casting from the Knucks ...
.... "Not Anymore" ....
That should net a better look from the powdercoat ...
The repop left case had a huge lip sticking out, pretty much got it gone..
Not going to flow in the rest of the case cause the gen will hide most all of it .. Only what the eye can see ...
Shoot .... Need some music to go along with eyeballing the thread ...
How bout "Hey Joe" Acoustic Style ...

Much thanks ...
At the moment I hadn't found a "Magic Wand" on the Snap-On truck ...
(Hadn't been from the lack of looking)
But didn't slow me up much on ... "Conjuring up Creativity"

Got around to lapping the pinion case race today ...
Didn't take very many spins to see the satin look all the way around the ID ... All trace ware is gone ...
Ok ... Alright ... Going to try and keep the case race that the motor case has in it now .. I tried to do what's know as a plug fit ... That's not working out all that well cause the case race is already worn out past .0006" oversize bearings ... Which happens to be the largest size I have on hand .. Gotta order the .0008" and .001" bearings .. Hoping that using one of those sizes will allow me to see .0005" to .001" running fit. ... Found some of Dixie's old stock and got them coming .. Boys, I miss Harry something bad ...
Cut in some oil lead in ramps. .. Could have went 360* in the bushing, but just a bit more oil going to the rods/bores wont be over working the cast iron oil pump ... Did install speed up gears on the pump .. Increases flow rate by 25%
.. Done for the day, time to Bop ...

I knew it was going to be close ... But dang .. !!
Using the max oversize bearings available, got right at 0.001" running fit ... That's as far as that case race can go.
If it was a tenth over the max 0.001" running fit, I'd be replacing the race with a new one ..

Moving forward with the motor build was to check the breather timing ...
Since it was running a stroke before (4-5/8") the case window had some trimming done on it already.
Mocked up the flywheels and installed a degree wheel ...
Check showed; Opens at 18 degrees ATDC, closes at 96 degrees ABDC ...
Again, it was on the far edge of specks ...

Did get the case drilled for lowering the top end oil drains ..
Just a few more holes ..
... /// https://youtu.be/NJO7hcinS-U \\\ ...
Also a check on the crankpin nut swing ...

Had some work done when the 4-5/8" stroke was installed, but now we have a whole new ballgame with the 4-3/4" stroke and Carrillo Rods ...
These H-Beam rods are a bit fatter than the S&S rods ..
Going to grind till I have .060" between the moving parts ..
Got lucky with the pistons at the kiss point of the swing, no need to grind any on them ..
Sometimes ya just have to think like a Pirate to work on old iron ..
... /// https://youtu.be/TpTxdYHLYLo \\\ ...
Getting a few numbers down for the balance chart ...
Now that I know the pistons don't need to be modified can add a few more numbers to the chart ..
Front rod needed some swinging room too ..
