On the box it said Mark Lasalle ..

What year range is that right side case? You'd mentioned it was later based on the assembled engine photo I posted. What does the 48 on the inside pattern tag refer to?

Pic shows inside of left case which I'd thought (due to the different external surface finish) might have been aftermarket. The number 112-481 is used on Knuckleworks cases but this engine was rebuilt a long time ago. Did they repop the inside mold tag when they made their patterns? Nice touch if so.

What do I have here? Number pad height is about .090" and boss is dead flat checked against a straight edge. If it's not or probably not aftermarket I'll ship it for yer evaluation. Pan values are getting silly so though I like upgrades if it's worth saving then I might do that since I'm not going to beat on this one.

Looks (technically...) serviceable but I want to ride this one so I'll set it aside though it's been rebuilt and look for a 1948 rear or a pair to have a pair for da future when prices get completely stoopid. Then it might be worth all the casting rehab...unless someone makes perfect repops by then.

The right side case is 1950 to 52 ...

Here's a photo (Below) of the 48 & 49 case ... That area that I circled is left over casting from the Knuck top-end oil return ... It's there but was not drilled ...

That casted in date code is the first year that a major change was done on the motorcase ...
47 Knucks will have a 41 date code ... 41 was the first year for the FL's and ran all the way to 47 (Production run)

Belly numbers tells the year that the cases was made in ...

Only referring to the far right #pic here. Nothing there looks like my 48 cases do . The pad on my case is exactly 0.100 proud of the case, belly number 148-2178

Was going to take a photo of farmall's case numbers, but there was none on the case ...
This tells me that somewhere down in the life of it something wacky took place ...

I have the stamps to put them back on, really no need for em cause they are not used for the Vin #'s ..

Since our plan is a new super up-grade left case, we can do a I.D. number which includes the year 2021/22 ...
                  Or stamp in " U Fucking A " ( A is for Awesome)

Belly is mostly removed on left side too. Final decision, it's wall art and can go with the bike at my estate sale (about which I won't be around to care).

Proceed with upgrade plan including Knuckleworks left case, output shaft swap, pump gears, S&S breather gear and any massaging that case half needs.

Polishing is metal removal is damage (unless it's blending a repair) and requires a lifetime of perpetual re-polishing (no protectant is perfect) so fuck all that.

Making vintage sand castings look modern kinda defeats my point. MUCH respect for the labor involved in making a show bike but this one will be a typical functional rider from before they were fetishes.

Say .... Want to move the case breather to the right side case like what was done on the 52 case .. ?

If you're planning to keep a chain primary, might want to keep the auto lube in play ..

Here's some kind of ugly ...

Lets see how it cleans up with doing a tune up on it ...

Cleaned up pretty dang good .. Powder-coat laid down nice ...

Part of the tune up is to reseat the check ball ...

After the light cut a bit of lapping goes down ..

All the gears but for this one looks great ... Got a new gear on order ..

Pump body shows no signs of damage ... Which is a bit strange ..
I'm thinking that the damaged gear was installed in the pump from another pump where shit took place .. ??
