Just a wee bit of sawing ...

What that cut allowed, was for letting the bottom retainer sit flush on the head instead of on the valve guide shoulder, in turn increasing installed height measurement .. (Which was needed for the .533" valve lift that this cam grind has going on)

Soon the other head will be on ...

    And the intake ...

Even if it isn't mine, I love seeing a motor come together!

That attention to detail and knowing what details to attend is key. It is also not common vs. the fuckton of slapped together work out there more suitable for a lawnmower but considered "good enough" when those bikes were transportation.

Since engine is near done I'll need to choose a clutch and belt drive. I'll reengage brain after reviewing previous posts so we can get that stuff ordered.

Let's revise and get a Panifold on order. A bit more midrange can't hurt.

Two very good, and basic steps shown here by D in setting up these heads.

One is the chamfer of the margin area of the valve to get the valve-to-valve clearance needed for the cam. In these hemi heads, where the valves move toward each other in overlap, this is a needed check.

The other really good point is moving the lower spring seat down to get enough spring installed height. This is a little more difficult than just slapping on a taller top collar. But the tall top collars have their own clearance issues. And of course with a pan head, you have a valve cover right there that limits upper collar height.

    Nice job all around, D.

    Will make it so ...

The Panifold will work really well with the intake ports that the VT heads has ..

That Rivera is a nice kit but the difference between the bare kit and kit with the inner primary I'll have to amputate to work with the Pan looks about 1400 bucks.

I like the Rivera clutch on my FXR which is nicely machined but need to figger a less wasteful primary/starter fix. Got any plain used inner cover etc parts lying about? Need not be Rivera but do need plain alloy no plating.

Indeed. Frank is my favorite monster because he can double as a jumpstarter.

I've got other stuff going on so I'd prefer not to have to lay out then mill the whole thing on a manual mill. Mods are no problem.

I posted some pics of a BDL EV575 (softail) setup a while back... Is that not something you might want to run?

Set these up for 65-69, I could do an offset for softail trans maybe.

So many ways to go with the primary ...

A brief look at what eBay has to offer turn up this ...

Polished 2" Tuxedo Style Ultima Primary Belt Drive for Harley Softail 90-06

    Also available in Black.

FITS: 1990-2006 Harley Davidson Softail 5 Speeds & aftermarket 6 speeds
as well as many Custom Choppers or Bobbers that use a 99 & earlier Softail style trans.

Complete with High Performance Alto clutch plates and a 2” Goodyear belt,
this high quality belt drive assembly will surely enhance the look and performance of any American motorcycle.

Designed to withstand all the pavement pounding power you can throw at it,
and with a more centered weight distribution compared to the larger units, this belt drive
is a textbook example of getting the most “bang for your buck”.

    All that for a $1000 ...
Could be a thought since it has the clutch, belt drive and a heavy-duty motor plate all in one package ...

Changing gears here for a moment ...

A few posts back the Big Block Chevy was mentioned...

The shop next door to me to me is run by a gear head ..
He's been keeping an eye on my Truck project for a long time ..
Even offered to buy it ... Told him it wasn't for sale ...

    Soooooo ....

He found a Chevy short stepside 72 that he's going to build ..
Also found a 454 ci BBC out of a motor home that had super low miles on it ..
Throwing a few Hot-Rod parts into the rebuild, got me doing some of the machine work ..

    Going to run a 700 R4 trans ....
That outta be a fun ride ...
Always did like the 67 to 72 Chevy pickups ...

Well, ya gotta start somewhere ...

That 4X4 got a long ways to go ...

    It's getting a LS6 ...

He didn’t happen to get that low mile 454 BBC out of TN in the past few months did he? My curiosity of course gets the best of me because my dad got rid of a motor home with that exact situation going on this year. He didn’t want the motor home but damn if he wasn’t a little hung up on that powerplant, did well on it though.

Could be, my dad ended up trading the motor home and a Yamaha cruiser for metal roof materials and installation at his home in Sequatchie mountain. Cancers been kicking his ass so he doesn’t have time to mess around with toys anymore but he keeps the home up. That’d certainly be a case of small world.
