Is that one of those, I think they call a ramp, breather gear?

Yes, air ramp ... "Don Hotop" started making those some years ago ..
Helps out at higher rpm's ...

The downside of this is, No-Mo arresting screen to stop debris from a blow-up getting into the cam chest ...

But .... Hoping that won't happen with this Hot-Rod motor ...

(If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room) .. Lol

Say, I'm in need of some frog hair, you holding .. ??

I just fell into a 48EL (or so sayeth the serial) that was supposedly overhauled long ago but was obviously Bubba'ed (see pic) and apart it must come for case mount ear repairs and whatever eldritch horrors lurk inside.

Given that there's no reason not to gut rehab it (bellies are mismatched, I've not lifted the heads yet to see actual bore and stroke and builder is deceased), How do ya feel about a low-ish compression 84" with a moderate drop-in cam? If not that, what's a good way to get about 80 cubes? Objective is a comfy torquey cruiser to be ridden gently but not suck on the highway. I've got newer bikes to thrash so this will be ridden gently.

This crank is Plug & Play for your motor ...
    4-5/8" stroke, 3-7/16" + .030" bore = 87 cubies

Came out of the 52 that's now 92 cubes .... Didn't have the heart to break it down being we was going with the Carrillo rods ...
All S&S stuff, most likely they sold it complete ... I could call in the numbers and fine out if it was them that did the assembly ??

All of what you see is what you will get ...
You'll be smelling like a Rose with the deal I'll throw at ya .. !!

    BTW ....
Your 48 right case is from the 50-52 era cause the 48 & 49 had leftover casting from the Knucks ...

That motor would definitely NOT suck on the highway. No boring of the cases or heads either. You would have a peppy, long-lived motor... Go for it farmall!

No barrel of shit here, just another old motorbike engine needing a home and thanks to back surgery (mostly) working out I can get enough sleep to push more projects. Objective is a fun bob job plain and simple. Those Edlund frames look mighty interesting too as this sure ain't no resto.

Call 'er in then shoot me an email. If there's any remote reason to break down the crank for inspection that's cool too. Consider the parts reserved (earnest money deposit no problem because I'm in earnest!). I can drive the engine down from SC after Daytona and yet another build thread may begin.

Something clean and traditional like this classic would be a nice outcome:

Man, the crank is like new ... I didn't do a check in the truing stand for runout, but the motor was a running motor so most likely it's on the money especially if S&S did the build up on it .. ??
Jugs & pistons also shows no signs of ware ...

Ya known, I think I'll call em up with the numbers and get the scoop on when, where and who ..

    Well, that sucks .. !!

S&S was well know for keeping records on products that they sold ..
But, now that's out the window due to new and improved computer system ...

Gave em the numbers and they said "That's Old" ... I already knew dat .. !! .. Lol

    Back to sanity .....

A motor 70 years old you can expect alum threads to give up the ghost ...

Back to better than what was ...

Wanted to get both the C.B. and Gen Idle gears on low specs for end-play ...
Going to spin a few spacers out on the lathe ...

Trimmed off .030" more from the C.B. gear for the swing of the cam lobe ...

Won't be needing the frog hair now ...

Rods are dead center to the bore, gotta love dat ...

    It's glue time ...

Did a check on the lash of cam gear to pinion gear ..
Reused the old pinion gear that came out of this motor ..

Gotta say Thanks to "Justin Leienweber & Pop" ... The lash check was right on the money, couldn't ask for a better fit ...
