Think I'll run the wires on the 52 like this ...
Single-Fire wires from Morris Mag ..
Cut em down ... Some Husqvarna Chainsaw boots and net a clean look ...

More did you say .. ?
Ok ...
Filled the primary lube feed port with JB Weld ..
Since a belt drive will be in play, no need for oil anymore ...
That adjusting screw for regulating oil flow to the chain is now along for the ride ..
Won't matter 1 iota where it's locked down at .. No oil will be getting into the breather vent ...
If a Fellow ever wanted to go back to a chain drive, could drill out the shi errrrr Dough ...
(Wouldn't do much good on this motor cause of the crankcase vent being moved to the right side case)

Loaded the S&S reverse rotation C.B. gear and set up the end-play ...
The Weird SS Dist. has perfect back-lash on the gear mesh ...

No chain oiler for me. Chain wax is much tidier (and handy around the shop).

Well Guys ... Y'all growing old with all these motor builds yet ??
Got another one coming to me soon ....
Just got off the horn with a Az. Boy .... He did a trade with his 55 Pan motor for (Get this) used Delkron Gen cases, new S&S Big Bore jugs/pistons & S&S 4-5/8" stroker flywheels, Oem crown Shovel heads which has been dual plugged .. And all the other parts to complete a motor ...
Be a 96 incher ... Those cases could handle 3-13/16" jugs easy enough (106 cubies)
Y'all wanta see that one go together ??
Since ya did asked for it ...

Forward with the EL ...
Pulled the gen idle stud and replaced it with a new one ...
Found a bit of ware & tear on the Oem stud ...Last edited by Dragstews; 05-05-2022 at 3:36 PM.

Been a long time since I built a Shovel or Pan over 100 ci ...
I'm going to do my best to get him to sell his S&S 3-5/8" Big Bore jugs/pistons (New stuff here) and buy a set of Axtell's 3-13/16" jugs ...
Speaking of Axtell, Ron' been in the hospital sick with Covid for a few months ..
His friends are keeping the shop rolling,
Shortie been there since Doc retired... And he's getting some age on him ...
... (Ain't we all) ...
Just my opinion, but I think he should let the shop take care of itself and go buy a .....
(Maybe not dat one, but y'all get my drift) ....Last edited by Dragstews; 05-05-2022 at 5:15 PM.

More motor builds? FUCK YEAH! More's the merrier.
Good score on the Delkron cases because though they have new owners there's not much happening (despite tons of toy money being spent this year and bike prices going nuts).

Crank is built ...
More checks are on the horizon ...
Set up a degree wheel for a check on breather timing ...
And the numbers are;
Opening at 20 degrees after TDC
Closing at 86 degrees after BTC
S&S specs ... Opening: 17° after TDC (+/- 10°)
Closing: 82° after BDC (+/- 10°)
We are on spec ...
The reason for the timing to fall within the given S&S specs is their gear has added open timing to the gear window ... (Which means I don't have to fart around with the case window)
Those Boys knows what it takes to build a Hot-Rod Harley motor ..
Also a check on the pinion to cam gear lash went down ...
It was on the money .. Couldn't have a better fit !!

Motor case still had the 1/4" generator holes for running the 32-E Gen ...
They got drilled to 5/16"
Awhile back I bought a few 65-A gen gears off eBay ... They was used Oem stuff.
Not fond of the re-pops cause most of them being a very loose fit on the armature shaft splines..
Did a test fit and not liking what I have for backlash ... To dang tight ..
(Can turn it with a screwdriver, but not by hand most likely it would wine) ... Soooooo
Going to change the gen gear to another one and see how the fit acts ...

Don't have alot of choices ...
Hoping one of the gears mic's less than the gear on the gen .... ??
Wasn't much diff. in size ...
Going to do some lapping using a old idle gear ..
Don't want to use the gear that's going to see service, it has nice backlash to the C.B. gear ...
By introducing some ware to the Gen gear should loosen the bind up where it will spin by hand ...Last edited by Dragstews; 05-07-2022 at 8:16 PM.

That level of tooling and parts stash setup and the knowledge to make/use them is why this Pan is the first bike engine build I've outsourced and consider it money well spent. That kind of bitsa build/oddball parts combo/performance upgrade requires a specific lifetime skill and knowledge set to pull off at that highly detailed level and since I didn't grow up wrenching Pans the wise move is what ya see.
As my highly successful machinistbro taught me the path to profit is knowing what and when to farm out. Drag is pleasantly rational to deal with (or we'd not be dealing).
Customer skills note for newer readers:
Study the shit out of everything you consider having done so you have a real understanding of the work and reasons for it. READ, especially threads like this one and study a variety of forums. Even if you never turn a wrench personally you'll get better outcomes, be able to fully communicate with your technician so both of you are on the same page, and if in doubt the only "dumb" question is one you don't ask.
There are no dumb questions but some dumb questioners who should have put in work to ask questions which will better inform them. Remember your mechanic doesn't read minds and may not be a communications major. Also remember just because something looks kool to ya doesn't necessarily make it a good idea. Figure out in advance if that sexy air filter the size of a shot glass will run like shit, or if the cosmetic mods you like to look at actually work for where and how you ride. (If I ran without fenders I'd be wearing mud and roadkill.)
If in doubt, do a build thread and the 33 hive mind will pitch in. (Hard to believe I've been here nearly ten years...)Last edited by farmall; 05-07-2022 at 11:36 PM.
