Tried to sand under all the pot holes in order to net a nice chrome job, but it felt like I was beating a dead horse .. So ....
When your horse has died, it's time to get off it's back ...

Going to try my hand at doing this ...

This ornament has been re-pop, but they are not cheap ...

Going to need a Hobby Sander to keep the lines after the fill goes down ...

The tooling and materials to do this job is adding up to almost what a re-pop would cost ...
Not to mention labor and chroming ...

I have lab metal and chrome powder here in the shop ... That would certainly be the cheap way to get shinny on it ...

    But .... It's not ....

Dang good fit with using the manifold adapter rings ...

Intake manifold adapter rings for stock cylinders are used to update early style O-ring intake manifolds and cylinder heads to late style flat band type seals.

Makes for a better seal when these are in use ...

Got a bit of ugly going on here ...
The old and the new has a differnace look to each ..

A run through the glass bead blaster will net the same look on both case halves ...

Permission to do so .. ??

Here's an eyeball peek at how the crankcase vent bolt passage was modified for venting to the right case ..

A blind threaded plug was made and welded in .. That allowed for a bolt to be used as in the 65-up cases ..

Tis the same gig as the 52 seen ..

All threaded holes was chased ...

Don't want any surprises on assembly !!
All was in grand shape, just like back in 48 ..

Twas a '69. I am thinking I want to build a digger next and was thinking that was a fun motor, of course it is another kick motor, but at least no frame number issues. I am just not sure I could get my money back on a sporty.

As you may have guessed I won't be doing a lot of riding anymore, but I still want to build em as long as I can.

Well, kiss my grits and butter my biscuits !!

Gear case is like day one ..

Case cam bushing fit is A-OK ... Don't see any signs of it ever being replaced ...
Along with the C.B. & Gen idle shafts .. No signs of ware ..

This old motor must have been mothballed back in 49 ..
Ran around the block in 48 and then went into hibernation !!

Cylinder base studs are installed ..

Located top-end oil drain back holes to be drilled ..

A bit of chewing on the new case ..

Next to do is to install the 69-up Timken bearing ..

The Jim's tool for loading the inner snap ring (Seen in the above photo) was made for doing the 91-up Evo's ..
Mo-Co did away with the casted in steel bearing insert that the bearing cups & snap ring sit in ... Only had the case material (Alum) for them to seat on ..
Loading that super stift snap ring the old way was chewing the fire out of the case bore ..
Jim's put on his " Tom Terrific Hat" and came up with this tool ..

I use it on all 69 and up motors cause it's .......

Line lapping the pinion case race will be next to do ...

Well, guess it did some spinning back in 48 ...

Didn't take the lap very many spins to see a nice satin look all the way around the I.D. of the race ...

Ok .... Found all the needed parts to complete the pinion setup ...

A mod went down on the oil hole feeding the rods to allow a bit more oil to the flywheel cavity ...
Since we have up-graded the oil pump to the 73-up speed, no problems with getting the oil back to the oil tank ...

Did the math and .0006" OS was the winning ticket ...

Mock up the flywheels, set em in the case and some checks will go down for rod swing, piston kiss, breather timing (Open & Closing) ... Moving right along with this motor ...

Still need to balanced the wheels ... That will be tomorrow ...
Got to go water "Ruth" my Mule .. !!

    BTY ...
    He's a Jack not a Jenny ....

I was wondering when a problem would stick it's ugly head up ??

    Here's what's going on ..

The pinion gear should be a slip fit on the shaft splines ..
This is for allowing the gear to ride up to and on the cam cover pinion bushing ..
Harley's design there was to close off pressure oil from escaping into the gear case ..

Dang thing is tight as bark on a tree .. So ...
Going to introduce a bit of ware by lapping the gear and splines ...

Working the gear with lapping compound freed it up where now it has a slip fit ..

Just what the Doctor ordered ...

Balanced the wheels and doing some of the checks ..

Mock up the right flywheel with jugs/pistons for a look at the pistons at bottom of stroke
Since this was a running stroker, not going to find much that needs attention in that area .. But, a looksee will go down none the less ..

The kiss is fine and dandy ..
