EVO Sportster Direct Starter Solenoid Button

Looking for some Info on the Direct Starter Solenoid Buttons. Everything I can find only fit the 1991 and Up evo. I have a 1989 Evo sporty. So was wondering if anyone knows of one that fits this model? or if these starters are interchangable so I can just pull one off a newer sporty and slap it onto my bike.

The later starters are an upgrade and your solenoid contacts (cheap to replace) are probably smoked by this point anyway. This advert notes later part numbers interchange and that the later is 1.4KW which is used on five speed Sportsters like mine:

You will need an outer primary cover gasket kit for your year and starter gasket 31488-81(fits both) if you swap starters, and it's a very good time to replace or upgrade your battery cables because they can deteriorate underneath the insulation and crimped lugs.

This part number is your original starter which I wouldn't bother repairing if one croaked. Note the end cover style:

In my 1986-1990 factory parts book HD doesn't list an end cover or gasket so I guess the fuckers sold complete solenoids or expected buyers to hunt parts at automotive starter shops who should have no problem since they are used on millions of cars.

You can see why the pushbutton end covers wouldn't swap. I'd run the later starter if it were my Sporty.

Awesome, Thanks for the info man! my current starter actually isn't bad, still works fine. Im just currently doing a chopper build and trying to get rid of as much electrical as possible in the process.

This guy had your problem to solve but didn't know his starter was early, else the cover he bought would have fit since BT and Sporty covers match. His work is nicer than the high end noid pushers. (The updated comment is mine since your question prompted me to add it.)

Since the stock system uses a relay, you can replace that little Bosch-style relay with a manual push button mounted elsewhere if you want to get the controls off the bars. I prefer to leave them there and use switches as backup.

You could tack weld or braze a hunk of tubing to your original cover, drill it, and use nicer looking hardware than the Donnie's post shows or just use nicer looking hardware.
