    Default Starhub late wideglide axle help

    I got a later showa front end that I wanna put this old star hub I have on I ordered the step axle kit with sleeve for the wheel all is good but the threaded end of axle has wiggle room in the lower....the sleeve doesn’t fit in fork lower cause it’s not a panhead fork... so I need a sleeve or something inside the left lower to make the smaller part of axle the nut goes on tight

    Anyone no the diameter?i don’t have a micrometer would I need a 3/4 to 5/8 reducer?
    Right now I have a dual flange wheel with 3/4 axle
    I attached photos thanks I found these on amazon
    Also I will have to cut the sleeve from step axle to act as a spacer

    You really need to buy one they are cheap....... Plus your going to need it when you start making your spacer........

    The classic approach would be to bore the left lower leg for the backing plate sleeve you have, and use a spacer on the sleeve to make up for the lack of a backing plate. You would need the sleeve nut as well. That is also a very strong approach; the axle is on the small side to span the distance unsupported.

    So I can just drill it out big enough for sleeve to fit then make spacer

    No, not drilled. It needs to be bored because the fit is a slip fit/ light press, and you cannot achieve that fit by drilling. Also, as Tattooo pointed out, it needs to be square.

    Got a micro meter here’s photo of my axle and what it reads in inches and the new one that’s smaller what size sleeve would I need to make my lower leg smaller diameter so new axle fits good no wiggle Click image for larger version.

    Did the sleeve you got ever work? I’m trying to find an axle for an old star hub on a later wide glide as well.

    Evo years. 85 and up 41mm with an original star hub 21”. It’s the same scenario that Kbosch encountered. Just wondering what/if any of these solutions worked.

    The stock axle and the backing plate sleeve in the second pic in post #1 are required to properly mount and support a star hub. (That applies to the original star hub; there are now any number of "star hubs" that have non-stock bearings and may require a special axle.)

    You will need to machine the left lower leg to fit the backing plate sleeve, and turn up a spacer to make up for the width of the backing plate. This is NOT a bolt-on swap.

    Thanks for confirming, Jim. I figured it was going to take some creativity to make it fit. This still seems like the best route to take to work with what I’ve got.

    Keep in mind that most of the original star hubs need some rework, as they are getting quite old. Luckily, all the individual parts are being repopped, and the bearing rollers are the 9220 series that is also used on the pinion side in pan & shovel motors.

    Thanks again for the advice. There not any slop in it from what I can tell, but probably would be in my best interest to rebuild it.

    If it's not sloppy don't rebuild it ride as it might have more slop than you have now with repro parts........... Take is apart clean it good grease it and go if it looks good apart.............
