Sugarcubes just laid out an excelent primer on EVOs in his last post. Not much more to say except good advice on proper warm-up to avoid base gasket leaks.

The compliance fitting gaskets, 29242-83, from the early evos should fit it just fine. Any shop that deals with evos should have some.

I have 1984 Evo in my 53Fl, It has run now about 200t miles. I have once do a head job: seats, guides, porting and kubblewhite valves, flows now about 120 hp, Then I have reringed it twice, now ring crooves are in max clearance so next time I have to bore it and put new pistons. I have also renew lifters once when I put Time saver pushrods also. Cases have splitted once when machine shop put and line new camshaft bushing to cone and chance plastic breather for S&S piece. Same time I also change original oil pump for S&S piece. So my opinion is that Evo is very reliable Engine when you renew it with quality parts.

                120hp?? Hmmmmmmmmm

                Anyhow,

The old '84 - '89 probs I have never encountered. I had a 88, and MANY of my frends had evos in those years. We placed THOUSANDS of miles (500 miles, one way, in 100 plus heat) running 85mph most of the way totaling 10's of thousamds of miles, with no such failures.

Not saying it wasnt a real issue, but no way Id toss off a good deal on a decent model in those years
