Ok, so Ive got a 78 fxs I chopped this winter and I just took took her on the maiden voyage when I realized something was super dicked up in the tranny.(no pun intended) 4th gear is where 1st should be and neutral is between 3rd and 4th. so my shift pattern is 4,n,3,2,1. how does that happen! I haven't had the transmission apart at all but is there any way the drum could just be on backwards? need some advice.
ratchet top completely backwards.. wtf.

FX and FL lids are different
Copied from another site
"The shift pattern on both bikes is one down three up. However... the shifter drums are different. The shifter drum for a FL is designed for the shift linkage to be connected to the lower side of the drum to achieve the one down, three up pattern. The FX drum is reversed, but the linkage is also reversed (connects to the top of the drum). So with both parts reversed, you still have the one down, three up pattern.
Bottom line, the FX and FL drum are reversed, but since the linkage is also reversed you end up with the same shift pattern."Comment

I don't think you're understanding my post. it doesn't have anything to do with the one up 3 down. I cannot get to first gear unless I take it all the way to where 4th gear should be. I don't care what direction I would have to go rather it be one up 3 down or one down 3 up. I just need to know why 4th gear is the first thing I hit.Comment

yea man, I'm lost. never heard of anything like it. I guess I'll have to take it to someone with more knowledge than me. lolComment

Shoot, being it's set up as a jockie shift, don't see it causing a problem with the pattern ..
But having neutral in between 3rd and 4th would call for a look-see....!!
