bpeak: I'm starting a build on an '85 1000cc. I have a complete bike - the motor in the bike had a seized crankshaft. I got another motor with a blown transmission (big hole in the case). Basically I'm about as far as breaking down the two motors to get the cranks out and now I'm cleaning parts - made easy by Purple Power!

I just want to tell you that this entire thread has been really encouraging, and your finished product is very close to what I'm going for. I do have some questions for you though, now that there's been some time for you to ride and feel it out.

Edit: I'll rephrase - not a complete bike, but a roller with a mostly complete motor!

Got out n about last night. Bikes running pretty good. I keep hearing odd noises and freaking out but I don't think it's anything really as an issue. Just the bike talking to me. I think a new clutch is in the works sooner or later. I did not replace the plates/fibers when I rebuilt the motor. And now, every now and then (rarely), when gassing it, i get a blip of a slip. No change in RPM or power really. Just feels like it slips for a split second then right back on power. Oh well. Thinking I might wait a bit, open it up, and actually do a full transmission inspection and new clutch all at once. We'll see.

Did you recheck clutch adjustment? Does this happen when hot or still warming up?
What type of oil, and the level is good?

Most likely the slip & catch is gear spacing and gear dogs having high ware .... ???

Could also have some ware on the shift cam, top hats and shift forks...

More I look online in research, the more I agree with what you're on to. Clutch adjustment is good. And it isnt a slip like I've experienced with other older bikes. Has only ever happened when warmed up, and primary oil is at good level. So... thinking not clutch. Thinking trans inspection is next to open it up and see what I got. Who knows, I might then even find out why I'm still getting oil seeping out the primary filler cap. I suspect there is another gremlin behind the trap door.

(waiting for Dragstews to sell me a fully built plug-n-play rip roaring ironhead complete engine... that happens to be sitting on his bench... still)

Welp - the ironhead is no longer with me. Found a new home with a super cool dude. Made a trade that was very worth it to me. Check out the new thread on that build at: http://www.chopcult.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53065

One chapter closes... and a new one begins.

Haha. Yea man. I highly doubt I'll be doing any of that any time soon.

I may however be swinging up by your shop one of these days to chat shovels and see what we'll be in for. Thankfully the trade bike prolly wont need as much love as this ironhead did. We'll see.

Yep yep. Justin is a cool dude. He had plans for the bike that didnt really materialize. He initially listed it for a trade for a TBucket or cool Van project. That's what he was after. No initial bites so hes lookin cash now to be able to snag a 4-wheel deal. It's all good. Hes got some cool projects in the works - including the pan/shovel survivor hes working on... that I engraved the cam cover for... "Hillbilly Deluxe". Cool stuff.
