    i agree.
i was telling a friend just a couple days ago that "covers" were lame.
coil covers, horn covers, master cylinder covers, kick arm spring covers. and the list goes on.
    and the beat goes on.
even stuff like factory narrowglide lower tree covers? really? toss that shit!
or the cover on a mousetrap clutch booster.
maybe it's just me, but i like to see mechanical parts and cast parts.

there are a few exceptions i guess..
cowbells on a FLH..maybe. they do look cool.

the alum riser cover on a 60s/70s FLH...???
it's kinda cool i guess, but it's just one less part that might rattle & shake off.
besides, the one pc riser looks pretty damn tough exposed.

clean is the name of the game.
    why hide the mechanical/business parts?
that's what makes a machine great to look at

Bikes with apehanger bars that seem just a little bit too much to handle. Or maybe it's just me getting old, and thinking too much about pushing a broke bike...

When the bars are longer than the forks... maybe is a 'top chop'?

I hate the retro look of some of the new Harleys, the ones they try to make look like 51 Panheads. The stock Pans were not good looking, that's why people chopped them. The cast fins on valve covers of the new Indians to make them look like a flathead are even lamer. I want to puke every time I read what a genius Willie G is. The guy saw what custom bike builders were doing to make Harleys look good and copied them, not my idea of a genius.

I don't know, genius is spotting a trend and then incorporating it into your product.

Let's look at the other side of the coin. Pontiac insisted that there was no market for nostalgia designs and brought out the "new" GTO, a car as far away from the original as possible. They blew it so badly that we lost Pontiac as a name plate, AT THE SAME TIME that Ford was making a killing on the revamped "classic" Mustang. Chrysler figured it out and finally so did GM with the Camero.

Having said all that, I prefer a real chop over a factory bike, but not everyone can wrench on their own. Also isn't this simply confirmation that all the years we have been chopping bikes, we were the ones on track?

I guess so. If it wasn't for all those original chop building bad asses getting envied by the mainstream Willy's crew would have stuck to making land yachts for cops and the wealthy.

I think credit goes to Willie G . For getting past management to save HD. HD had been sliding downhill drastically after 1966. The cone/shovel was under development but the resources weren't there to get it off the ground without an influx of capital. Enter AMF . Old timers , and new AMF management ,had to be convinced that in order to save HD that the Superglide style motorcycle is what young up and coming baby boomers were building ,and those who couldn't could buy from HD.
It became a success and saved HD . Even through the quality control problems of AMF people still fell in love with the superglide and then the Lowrider ( still a great looking bike all these years later).
