66 xlch carb?

Got a 66 basket mostly complete. Came with a zenith 38mm adj carb. She is wicked hard to start.got it started a couple times and ran seemingly well. I can get her to pop almost every kick just won't start up Rods good and mag in place per manual. Is this a good carb or should I look to update?

It has a tube near the manifold with a rubber cap. Is that a vaccume Line? The just noticed the rubber cap is in poor cond. Does this need to be plugged?

You sure don't want any vacuum leaks in the intake track ...

Also being that old of a bike, might be a good idea to have Morris Mag do a tune up on your Mag...
He will install rare earth magnets that give a lot hotter spark at kick over speed...
Make sure your not running resistance wires or plugs ...

And .....

I may be wrong about this .... But isn't a 66XLCH a Sportster ...???
Might have been better to had this thread in the "Everything Sportster" area of the forum ....
