Bologna on white bread. Shovelhead project

Been lurking around here under a different name for some time now, email got hacked so I'm staring fresh.

Picked up a 77 shovel last year with the plan of building a simple no frills bike to have fun on. Well it took a lot longer to get my shop built than I thought so here we are now ready to go.

Story behind me ending up with the bike goes like this, seen an add for a 52 pan in a late 60's swinger frame with a clean title for a ridiculously good deal. Not running but whatever he only wanted 8 grand so I called him up and said I'll buy it sight unseen. bailed out of work early the same day and drove 7 hours to pick it up, called for better directions when I hit town and he says that he just sold it half hour ago... Fuck. Oh well. At this point I wasn't going home without a bike so I jumped online and found this puppy only an hour away. Started good, ran great, drove Ok (tires were a bit low) Also it turned out he used the own the pan I came to get originally, small world.

couple pics of when I picked it up

Im pretty bad at taking pics as I go so hopefully I don't miss too much shit along the way. also don't have a computer at home so all the picture uploading will have to be done at work

    anyway, tear down

this guy was a real bitch to get off without an impact, had to sacrifice a screwdriver handle to the chopper gods and jam it into the chain

Think I got the pics sorted out so back at it

Got it torn down completely and sent the frame out for a hardtail

figured I should build an engine stand while I wait

Tore the front end apart to replace some leaky fork seals and possibly toss in a set of 4 over tubes if I can locate any for a decent price, thought why not shave the fork legs while its apart too.

Broke out the ol hacksaw and got to work

Next I went switched out to really fine machinist file and some 120 grit sand paper and went to town, the reflector plates turned out to be a real pain in the ass because the middle 1/4 inch on the flat is the same exact diameter as the rest of the tube. Really easy to go too deep

                      Sanding "jig"

Sand, sand, measure, drink, drink, sand

got pretty close here but it still looked a bit "pregnant" around the middle, back to the file

down to 320 grit, going to hit the whole thing with 600,800 and 1000 then polish it up

One down one to go. Didn't turn out too bad, got a little heavy with the bastard file in a couple spots but from 10ft back shouldn't be able to tell.

I hand sanded a set of lowers once too. Would love to get a lathe one day, but sometimes filing and sanding can be pretty therapeutic. Looking good so far. Thanks for sharing. I'll be staying tuned.

I admire your patience, shaved my lowers too but got too bored, grabbed the grinder and went a little too deep
