chopping cam cover, few questions
Hey guys i wanna chop my cam cover (2000 sporty), I was reading in my service manual that i need to remove my push rods.
Is that absolutely necessary? my cams are all good, and dont want to replace them or anything. just wanna chop the cover and put it right back on.
any tips or answers would be appreciated!

Make sure you remove the ignition rotor! Then remove the cam cover bolts and line them up so they go back correctly. Aside from that you don't need to remove the push rods. That's only necessary if you plan on removing the cams.

You can do it without loosening the pushrods, but you'll need to be EXTREMELY careful not to pull cams loose in the process. They are very easy to dislodge in the process of pulling the cover. I tried to chop mine without loosening the rods, and almost succeeded, but the force required to pull the cover off was enough to knock a single cam loose. Because of the pressure exerted, it was impossible to replace without doing exactly what I should have done to begin with. So while I had it open, I went ahead and replaced the cams and did the 1200 conversion as well.

Be best to pull the pushrods ...
Be a booger to get the cam cover off and back on with the valve springs having pressure on the cam lobes...
If you do manage to get the cover off that pressure will move the cams to one side or the other...
If your wanting to save some work from taking off the rocker covers, ya can get a set of adjustable pushrods and outer pushrod covers that allows for easy install...
Will also be needing the time saver pushrods..

2000 model year does not have pushrod adjustments to loosen as a previous post mentions.
you might be able to yank that cover off with some force, but how would you put it back on with the cams being pushed upon by the valve springs? same point as dragstews.
the right way to do it is remove the .rocker boxes. If it has the oem rocker base gasket(paper), they need replacing to the new style(steel alloy) anyway
I believe the MoCo is now selling chopped cam covers from their parts catalog for some models.

you can get it off but like stated above good luck getting the fucker back on! I just popped off my rocker covers and backed off all the rocker box bolts a bit and it slid off and back on like butter. No problemo!

Not mentioned is that little plugged off drill passage that needs to be re-plugged once shaved. don't re-plug it too deep either or you will oil-starve.

You know I've been wondering lately? Why do people today always want to take the easy way out???? What's wrong with doing it right the first time??? It might take a little longer but at least you know it was done right.... WTF.... Are people just that lazy??? Or just in a hurry to do something else????

The Old Guys will take the time to do it right the first go-around, cause they might not have the time to do it over..!!! ..
