    Bored Cylinder Groove ....

Shop down the road sent this jug to me...
Has a nice groove running where the wrist-pin would be working at in the bore...

First cut was at .010 ... Bore on the jug is std for a 1200cc Evo Sportster (3-1/2")
This jug at one time was a 883cc jug... Had a 1/2" bored out to get to the 3-1/2" bore..

Pretty much knew that a .010 cut wouldn't clean up the bore, so I reset the tool bit for .020 cut...
Still didn't clean up the bore. Set the bit for .030 over and got a super clean bore..

I wouldn't have put money on it cleaning up at .030... But ya never know till a bit of work goes down...

Being the talk is about boring jugs....

Fellow asked me awhile back, how do you get a sleeve out...
Told him that I bore the old sleeve to a few thousandth of the sleeve O. D.

This way you can go back to the same sleeve that was in it.... No need to do a thicker wall sleeve....

For those of us that don't have one. And in my case the nearest one is 93 miles away.

Would you mind posting some tool porn of your boring outfit set up and running?

      Thanks

        ... Sure ...
I'll see what I can find in that area...

The boring bar is made by Kwik-way FW model...

Tooling came from all over... The bore plate in the above photo is an S&S Cycle...
It allows this type of boring bars to do Big Bores to cases...

One end of the plate does the case the other end does the heads on Pan's and Shovel's.

Over the years I acquired three of them as Harley made new Models.
Top plate is for wracking Twin Cam cases..

The stand that the plate is bolted down to is made by Lacey Williams for doing automotive cylinder boring..
Called a Roll-over stand.... Does one bank, the block rolls over in the stand and does the other bank...
Does most all V-8's, V-6's, V-4's and straight 6's, and four bangers..
For smaller jugs, I use a three legged stand as what the Sportie jug was bored in.

Also tooled up for doing Marine blind hole boring too....

With what tooling I have I'm a boring fool.... I'll bore anything including your Mother-n-law .. (May see a need to sleeve that ho)
        ...Kidding, just Kidding...

        .... /// https://youtu.be/NJO7hcinS-U \\\ ...

        Speaking of sleeves.....

A electric/hyd press comes in handy as tits on a milk cow ....

          SWEET

That's exactly what I was hoping for

The boring plates, I've got one, an S&S casting says 5006 just below S&S. I don't have directions picked it up used thinking to make some kind of boring jig for my lathe. I also got these stand off pieces part #53-0007 boring spacer and #53-0008. Never seen any of them in use. Not what Harley trained me to use. Any picts or input would be much appreciated.

What you have is the later bore plate, has the pan & shovel head bolt patterns in one end. The other end is machined with the cylinder base patterns of 1936 to 99 big twins engines ... and 1986 to 03 Sportster....

The other two numbers that you have are spacers.
Spacer part # 0007 is required for the 86-03 Sportster models... It's 3-11/16" tall
Spacer part # 0008 is needed along with 0007 for the 84-99 big twins... it's 7/8" tall

With those tools along with a boring bar... Big Bore Jugs can easily be installed....

That is what I thought the 5006 was, thanks for confirmation, I wasn't positive.

That last picture you posted is exactly the spacers I have, mine haven't even been unwrapped from S&S's packaging. In your case boring pict,is the boring head clamped or secured in some way to the plate? or the table? how?

Next time you use one of the spacers, would mind posting a pict of the setup? I had no idea that they were to be used together

              Thanks for the info

The bar does clamp to the plate after the center fingers locates center.

Soon I will have a 98 Dyna WG motor on the build table for doing a 96" Stroke .. (4-5/8") and Big Bore...(3-5/8") ...

Will add to thread when I get to doing the case boring..

If I can find the photos, this motor grew in size from an 80 incher to a 96"

Found some... these are on the above motor....

In the above photo, you can see that the dowel pin is in the way of the spacer plates sitting down on the case deck....

Could have mod. the spacer or just pull out the dowel pin...

Thanks, I see it. Picts are very much appreciated. Would like to see the Dyna setup. Worth a thousand words yah know.

Is the plate clamped to the table? Is the plate rigid enough that you never get chatter?

I'm thinking about mounting the plate to the carriage of my lathe and then putting a boring bar in the spindle. Or running the boring bar between centers. Wasn't sure how much cantilevering of the plate would be acceptable.

Got an ex-mother-in-law (may she live forever) and yeah she is a scabby legged fat old hide.

Yes it is clamped to the roll over stand...
I made up a nice system that nails it down to the stand very well...

.... No chatter at all... Just need to start off with dressing the tool bit...

Haha... Scabby Legged old fat hide ... Haha
(Hope your O'lady don't see this thread, or you won't be getting none for a looooong time..!!!)

Wait, you did say ex.... Let the slur's fly-high..!!

She does resemble Jabba the Hut with a more disagreeable personality.

My current is hotter than a $2 pistol. Looks as good on the back of my bike as she performs and she looks REALLY good. Not sure what I did in a past life to deserve this, so I don't question it. There may have been a mistake in my favor.

Could say whatever about her mother, she and I are in agreement that 3000 miles might not be far enough away. It's a blessing to all that she looks and acts like her father, I toast him regularly.

Get to our ages, sometimes you develop some sense from all the stupid shit you done.

Pist of the plate attachment system you worked out? Nothing beats learning the easy way.

Locks it on the stand super well...

Compared to my ex MIL that specimen is a congenial, well dressed sexpot. Showed my House Panther she said "disturbing yet oddly sexy"

It'd take tequila for us, then any wrinkle would be fair game.

The pict of your clamping fixture is real helpful.
