Thanks for the machine porn. Looks like that plate setup could work with a quality milling machine too, though boring bars have great advantages over a mill.

I kinda said that same thing to Ronnie Trock not so long ago...

He uses a Bridgeport with the J head to do these... He does have a Qwik-Way FL boring bar in his shop...
Asked him why he was doing them in a mill ??, said that's the way his dad did them and he was set up with the tooling to nail the cases and heads to the mill table...

I have done them also in a mill, gotta say that doing them with a boring bar is much faster.... Set up time doing them in a mill takes a bit of work...
One of these days, we're going to have a race... !!!
Hang up the phone and go after it, first one done with the job calls the other.... The loser will owe the winner a steak dinner at Outback Steakhouse (And buy the drinks)......... Yummmmmmmmmmmm ... !!!!

If Trock sr. was still around, I would have to bet on him. He was brilliant, his setups were blindingly fast. The precision and lack of motion was apparent. He was also real patent with wet behind the ears guys who wanted to know stuff. He's missed, immortalized by his tooling.

Hard to beat a mill for versatility, once you've bought all the tooling. Of course, you've never bought all the tooling, there's always more. I think that may be the true advantage of the boring bar, you know what it does and it does it well.

If the gods didn't want us to eat animals, they wouldn't have made them out of meat.

        Excellent pictures, Thank you

My 5007 appears to have a hole for the stud, which is cool

Ron Senior was know as "The Sportster Guru"
His products for the Sporties was almost endless...
Made shift forks, trapdoors, pawl-carriers, a weld in repair corner for the case and the jugs for using Knuck's Pan's & Shovel's heads on a Sportie case.
His son "Ronnie" still have the jugs on line for doing these super mods...

Dang.... That's what I get for being the first Kid on the block to acquire the tooling...
(Should have waited a bit of time for them to perfect them. Oh well, water under the bridge now..)

Not all that sure I would want to do a race boring out the Evo cases.... Takes a bit of time to remove two cylinder studs and pull the dowel pins.... Sometimes they are as tight as bark on a tree in the case...

          P.S.
One other thing "The Late Ron Trock" was noted for was his line of specialty tools...

His tool line was sold to a Fellow not far down the road from Trock Cyc.
He's making them as Ron did way back when, if anyone sees a need for these...

Mike Hamburg sold what used to be Trock tools already? He was a most suitable successor to Trock sr.

An inventive fellow for sure. The custom lathe " faceplate" is a dandy idea, and of course could be made from a common faceplate if circumstances require.

If anyone needs blank faceplates they are available as are blank chuck backing plates in various spindle thread sizes.

Looks like that cam cover puller required some extra torque at one point! Nuthin' tacking a nut over the damage or substituting a cap screw wouldn't solve. EDIT: Nice pic swap!

Used quality US-made industrial lathes can be had cheap if ya ain't afraid to move them, and mills can be had reasonably. I'd like to see more bikers and gearheads buy them and I've helped my friends move theirs.

Dragstew, you said Mike Hammer. The last guy I bought a trock tool from, cam end-play checker, was named Mike Hamburg. Figured he must have sold out, I haven't needed anything in awhile.Click image for larger version

Farmall, I got an old South Bend out of a school back east. Cost me as much in shipping to get it to Denver as the lathe itself. To get it up here they wanted another $1800. Being Scotch, I wnet and got it in Denver, 8 hours. I make face plates up for various operations.

My South Bend "Aida" weighs about what my ex-mother in law does but is way more useful, much better tempered.

I had his last name recorded wrong in my Quickbooks files...
                    It is indeed Hamburg...

Say is that lathe a Super 10 ..???
                    Most Schools like using those....

(It looks much bigger than the Super 10's)

Reading Micky Spillane while doing Quickbooks?

13" most perfect ways I've ever seen. Same manufacture year as me. Cross slide has some school problems, also seems like 45% of the large heavy objects that ever got near it were dropped on it.

Parts that are supposed to be indoors trying to get out?

Had customers start those in the drive, me yelling shut it down, shut it down. It's almost always easier to fix if the cases are only in two pieces with the vertical parting line as intended.

I think I found the problem....!!!

Took a bore scope for a down hole look in the jugs...
In the front jug I see not one but two carb to air cleaner bolts in-bedded in the piston...
