My generation was called the slacker generation.
Everyone thought it was hilarious to tell us Gen Xers how useless we were. We had to deal with the WWII gen as they got grouchy and old, and our useless Baby Boomer parents as they realized that their life didn't mimic The Big Chill.
Millennials are just eating shit from Gen Xers (who wish we had toys as cool as they did) and Baby Boomers who are for the first time confronted with a group of people as self centered as they are.
Then there is Gen. X. We're stuck between a group that still haven't figured out how to send a fax, and another group that can't tell time unless it's a digital watch. I'm glad I had a WWII and Korea era Vet. Grandfather to teach me all the important shit that the Boomers couldn't handle. Like how to play craps, shoot a gun, wrench on a bike and be able to put in a day's work without the need for a pat on the head or a gold star.
    Fuck them all.
Bell bottoms and patchouli are just as goddamn fucking stupid as skinny jeans and ironic facial hair.

So true! and the genX (of which I am a member) is only a third the size of the generations on either end.

Technically, I'm a baby boomer but I'm like the very last one, having been born in 1960. My generation is fucked. We are largely responsible for most of what's wrong in America today. Subsequent generations have often left me shaking my head, but this latest generation gives me hope. I see many of them perfectly willing to buck the status quo as they try to right many of the wrongs perpetrated by previous generations, including my generation.

There are a helluva lot of really brave "kids" out there. Yeah, they'd likely shrink away at the thought of fist-fighting some of you hardasses but that doesn't mean they aren't brave in their own right. Hopefully, they can unfuck much of the fuckuppedness they were born into.

    You have given me a glimmer of hope. Maybe, possibly....hmmm, I don't know...God, I hope you're right.

I'm one of the kids from the 'competently useless' generation, want to know what I think of that statement?

    I think your completely right.

The whole "everyone gets a shot, everyone wins" thing pisses me off every single day. Here's an example: When I was still in the school system, I actually got myself booted from regular classes because I thought it was absolutely useless to do the work, considering they passed everyone anyway. They passed everyone, regardless of work done, and would accept any excuse, even if that excuse was just "I didn't feel like doing it that night." You could say "I didn't want to" for weeks on end, and they would buy it. If the teacher complained, they would go to the principal, and the principal would tell the student that he or she was a special snowflake and move them along to a passing grade as long as they "did it better next time." And that student would finish the course with a 75%, because they would feel bad if they failed and had to retake the work. It was ridiculous. I got swapped to a shop class, and THAT was the only time school taught me anything. If you didn't do the work, the first time, the teacher would tell you off, loudly, that you should have finished the work. Second time? Kicked out of his class for a year. Period. Get your shit done. I stayed in that class for 2 straight years, literally only taking auto-shop for 2 years because it was the only class that made sense to me (and because I liked fixing stuff). Fix the shit when you said you'd fix the shit, or get told to fuck off. No bullshit, no gold stars, and when someone got something better then you, its because they earned it by working their fucking balls off.

Here I was thinking "Fuck yeah, this is the real world. This makes sense, I can't wait to be out of here and working properly so I can actually earn shit." Nope.

I'm currently working in a warehouse. This warehouse stores lots of heavy shit, things that weight roughly in the area of 150 to 200 pounds, some go up to 500. In the interest of 'keeping the playing field level,' and 'broadening the potential workforce' (their words, not mine), there are workers in there who are the same age as me, with no physical disabilities, who can't lift anything over 50lbs due to having no strength whatsoever. And they can't climb ladders to reach the lighter stuff because heights scare them. And they can't deal with customers because they have 'social issues' and bail the moment actual work comes up. So these people, who can't budge over half the merchandise, can't reach one-third of it because its 20 feet up on a shelf, and can't give ANY of it to the customers themselves without coming off as serial killers in waiting and getting everyone written up for 'being rude to customers,' gets the same pay as I do. Oh yeah, punishments are shared too, because it would be unfair if only one person got punished, right? Hell, one guy misses shifts so often that he gets heaped with praise when he SHOWS UP TO WORK. Its ridiculous.

Excuse the mild rant, but it annoys the shit out of me that someone can be told he or she is something they simply aren't. I don't consider myself the stereotypical flawless macho mean motherfucker that everyone thinks they are behind a keyboard, but for gods sake, at least I know when I fuck up, I can accept being told I fucked up without losing my mind and sobbing in the corner.

I'm fucking sick of the hipster bullshit in the scene and especially on this site. This place is turning into a clique heavy, elitist bunch of bearded snobs. Seems to me like a lot of people are missing the point.

Okay, that was a rant I had no better place for. To the topic at hand, I feel like the current generation is afraid of anything but instant gratification. work, effort and trial and error might as well be foreign words. its all going to cave in on itself and those of us who know our shit will be standing when the dust clears.

Most people in most generations are slugs. There was never a magic non-slug generation, but part of sluggery is ignorance of history. Also worth mentioning is that "generations" are not really discrete since people continue reproducing while decades are just numbers.

There is no dust, therefore there is nothing to clear and no magic time when being a special snowflake with imagined or real insight will matter. What we do have massive global comfort and prosperity on a scale the past has never approached. Enjoy it and don't concern yourself with the herd.

The "current generation" is large enough to have plenty of bright, productive members. No reason exists to care about the rest so I don't. The lumpenproletariat or whatever one wants to call them exist to work and consume.
They don't need leadership qualities any more than my chickens.

Human prosperity and technology have never been more advanced. Is there something you want you are not getting? The leading edge of humanity is doing fine, and the rest of us in advanced nations have plenty of exploitable opportunities if we've initiative to take them. If others are slack that just makes them easier to out-compete. Fuck 'em.

I suggest effort is best spent maneuvering for advantage. If you aren't challenged in classes, remember that the purpose of school is just foundational and you need certificates to advance. Drop emotions and navigate reality as it is, not as you might wish it. To do otherwise has always been childishly naive. Get skills, use them for profit. Life is a shit sandwich and the more bread you have the less shit you taste.

That's right, life is a shit sandwich, and some people have to take a bigger bite than others, for various reasons. but to hear whining and complaining about how hard done by you are is BS, and then to be a burden on others around you is crap, 90% -99% of the time when bad things happen to you, you can't blame anyone else, because personal due dillagence usually prevents crap from landing in your lap, most useless people are hoping their mommy or goverment or someone worth blaming to fufills their wants, and when they don't, then they have someone to blame for letting them down, useless and lazy go hand in hand, I find most under acheavers always see the problem and not the solution. remember, the diffrence between adventure and ordeal is attitude, oh, and at the end of the day no one really gives a shit about your problems, or about as much as you care about theirs.

    Huh,,,WHAT ?????
We are surely NOT responsible for whatever "wrong" you suggest.
I was born in 58,,,and sure,, I partied my ass off,, was married a coupla times,, have 2 awesome kids who are in different gens as well.
My son,,, who is 10 years older than his sister, is for sure more level headed than her, all she cares about is what she can get free and everything is about her.
The boy on the other hand excelled in sports and went to college,, got his Masters from RIT and took up residence in Washington shortly after graduating.
The lines are blurred,, to me anyway between "generations", but I assure you that MY generation is alive and well and holding their own quite well.

In my opinion, much of the blame falls to the parents. Yes, there are certain innate traits that each child has and those can play a huge role but shit parents almost always make shit kids.

Here's my youngest...a right good kid by most any measure. He's going into a high performance automotive program next year with plans to get into a good custom shop or racing team.

in 2004...He helped me a lot. Mostly disassembly, but he was always excited to help and learn.

In 2014...in the process of building his first car.

I think the degree of fuck-up-ness has definitely exponentially increased along with average girth ... and whatever happened to politicized bikers?

"Kids" are doing "stuff" but latterly it seems to have tended to be on the new frontiers ... software, internet, and the likes (and I don't mean Facebook but open source, digital rights etc). The battle "on the streets" has been long lost, and any "labor movement" has been rendered into petfood.

I'd be happy if they just made a law making users have to prove they were more 'smart' than their 'phone' before they got one before I almost run over another plugged in, thumb tapper.

And can I just say how "offensive" I find this topic and how "unacceptable" it is, so please stop it immediately or I'll sue you!!! (I win ... or was someone offended before me?).

Call out hipsters for being bullshit is just envy. It's not their fault they are younger, better looking, have better looking girlfriend, better sense of aesthetics, and more money than us. I blame the parents.

They are also just about the only back-up we have coming up the rank ... otherwise biking, and particularly custom biking, would be dead.

There's a lot of old farts with really bad taste out there.

(Look at the opportunity positively ... try getting to know some hipster bikers on a personal level. Who knows, you might get luck with one of their 40 something, divorcee, Yummy Mummies).

Doesn't every generation have this same gripe? "In my day we walked up hill both ways in the snow with no shoes".

If a latte sipping plugged in hipster is bunching your panties,...it's probably because you have a doom and gloom attitude. The reality is MOST people are good.

I get inspiration from my 4 year old. She's blissfully happy all the time which makes me jealous because I've always been a sourpuss. She's taught me to lighten up and not give "as much" of a shit.

a lot of todays kids are fukkin worthless. just like some of every generations kids are worthless.

from what ive seen it has a lot to do with how their fathers interact with them.

im 50 and had buddys back in the day couldnt keep thier shit running, always came to me. they either did not have a dad or he didnt giv a fuk.

it was pathetic.my dad wasnt a great teacher but he had tools and he would walk by and say this or that on what to do,he was busy werking on his farm equipment,i learned a lot just watching him.

the kids i grew up with that didnt have dads or was city folk strugglled keeping ther shit running.

when i had a son i made a promise to myself he would never be like them.and he aint. years of working on go carts, dirt bikes,we actually built a bike from scratch when he was 8. and cars when he got older.

he is not afraid to tie into anything.and do it rite. he wants a harley so bad but has agreed to get out of nuculear engineering school first. he is now selling his bike which a gave him, a 92, yam xt600, to finance school. he is not happy bout it but cant take it where he is going to finish school.

so not all fukkin kids are dumasses!

    Good for him.

A nuclear engineering degree is worth setting a Vincent on fire and laughing while it burns, let alone selling any lesser machine. Motorcycles are fun but they are toys.

this kid will not grow up to be a helpless fuk.if he can build a motor like that for his own car he can do about anything needed in life.

im betting by the time he is 30 he could build a house, pour cement, rebuild a carb.skin a buck and run a trotline.

probably cuz his dad instilled in him the fact that anything is doable with a little thought and the correct tools.
