easyrider final scene location

the last scene in easyrider was shot on hwy 105 outside krotts springs la. i've been trying to locate the exact spot by comparing movie screen shots with google satillite photos but can't pin it down. i "think" it's just north of town where the road takes a hard right turn between straightaways but the river side of the levy is all different. has anybody been there or have local knowledge ?

One of the first movies I remember watching with my Dad, maybe 8-9 I was like wat the fuck did we just watch old man-mind blown.

I was 18 yrs old and in the army when it came out. I saw it for the first time at a drive in double feature off post at Ft Bragg NC. Growing up in the deep south and having recently discovered choppers and drugs i could totally relate to it.

Before the movie was released, Peter Fonda showed up on The Tonight Show to promote it. From what I remember he seemed stoned and enthusiastically described some of the issues he and Dennis Hopper had to deal with while filming. He made a big deal about the secrecy of the ending, saying "it will blow your mind, man". I saw it with friends (properly prepared) at the local premier, so nobody had any clues about the movie in advance. There was a sweet smell wafting through the theatre as the movie began, and everyone was thoroughly enjoying the film up until Jack Nicholson died. Bummer, man. The mood changed. Then, the ending. The crowd went silent, through the credits, and out the door.

Most of you have probably read or heard of the influence of Easy Rider. It's all true. It was palpable that night, and recognizable in my generation from then through today.

not sure about the ending scene but the cemetery scene was St. Louis cemetery #1. It is the cemetery where Marie Laveau, famed voodoo queen is buried so I bring out of town guest there all the time. Having grown up in New Orleans it is neat watching the movie, lots of nola history packed in there. They were building the I-10 interstate at the time and that is what all the construction is in the background. pretty cool.

I see that scene playing out in my head every time I ride around by myself in good ole God's country Oklahoma. I get the judgment death stares from the sunday worshippers when I'm gunning down lonely back roads on weekend morning runs. The rednecks make no sense out here, they hate fags and queen is on the radio all the time. They try to do the biker thing and call themselves hippies, then they go back to work and put the badges back on. The real kicker is the Jesus M/Ms, that shit is a fucking riot.

Where's the bridges? Goofy? I started out as regular foot my cousin was mad I skated better on a banana board than he on his tony hawk. He said man your goofy footed I said bullshit. he said left foot forward is goofy right foot is regular... well it took some time but all the skating I have ever done was switch, never could get regular foot back.

Expect to see freestyle boards to make a come back, with a lil Asian cat bringing it back. Alva's was Orange and The blue? I dunno. Sure there's some old skateboarder magazines floating around still. I gave mine to the Ramp House in Carolina Beach, My friend Kurney skated a vert ramp down there a a place called Big Boys Water Toys, Jim Reese built the Ramp house ramps most of them were or still are at the skatebarn/doublewide whatever anyone wants to call it. The street the ramphouse used to be on was winner street. My mom walked up to Jim reese and said are you a Winner? She used to know that family down there, he said no, but I'd hate to think I'm a loser. First time I ever met Chet Childress, he was playing a game of 720 at the ramphouse, a few years later I sold him some Pro Design pads with white lycra backs, He was stoked on seeing them, it was always yellow or pink, he'd never seen white. I was wanting underground pads... the PD's kept slipping off my Smith horseshoe pads, even after I cut the bottoms and hollowed a slot.

Hows that for straightening out some East coast skate history?

just got off the phone with a lady from the landry parish visitors center. there is a easyrider marker on 105 but she is not sure if it is exactly at the site of the final scene. she is going to do some checking and also ask a few people she knows in krotts springs. the marker is north of town.

Here's an update on my efforts to locate the exact spot that the final scene was shot. After talking with the state tourist people down there (who were totally ignorant of the movie, it's history or it's impact on the motorcycling public) efforts are being made by the state to erect a marker on that site . How fucking cool is that ?


About 5 years ago after attending a friends funeral at a little cemetary here I was walking around reading headstones and stumbled across a small one that was overgrown with weeds and had a small tree growing up against it. When I read it I was blown away to see that it belonged to two time medal of honor winner John King.

I couldn't believe that the grave wasn't better marked or maintained given his rare status of winning the CMOH not once but twice ! I started calling around and contacting people at the VA, the city, DAV, etc. I even located and contacted the John King Society whose members served on the ship John King which was named after him.

Nobody I spoke to was aware of his final resting place or the sorry condition of the gravesite. Once I got the word out the ball started rolling and today the gravesite is being properly maintained and honored by several Veterans groups and State and local organizations. It's amazing what you can do sometimes

Not much content in the citations, but for those not famiiar with old boiler technology it's worth noting they failed fairly often. Live steam from a burst boiler or pipe inside a ship's compartments would have been terrifying, scalding and blinding those it didn't kill outright.
