ah yes, another wiring thread (simplified XS650)

i'm to the point where i need to wire my XS build.
i've researched it a little bit, but wiring is definately not my strong suit. its a 1980 XS650, so its got CDI? im not sure exactly what that means besides it doesnt have points. and whats the little unlabeled box next to the rect/reg?

heres the diagram that i just put together tonight:

    does that seem right?

    no kill switch
    no turn signals
    no starter

no idea why you wouldn't want to run a kill switch but to each his own hah.

i am at the same point with my bike. here is what i have so far...

a kill switch and a key do the same thing in my book.
the only thing a kill switch does is give you the opportunity to run the battery dead by leaving your lights on

i like your setup, but you are running some different things than me, so its a pretty different harness.
although i do like the way your have your headlight/taillight wired

If you have a CDI then you'll need this diagram.

You just got to watch the red wire from the alt and the brown because that is how it charges. I always run the red to the battery and the brown to the ingition switch and never have a problem. If you were running a aftermarket ingnition i think you would be fine but Stock black box can burn up easy. I do have some wiring diagrams and have done over 25 of these bikes so if you get stuck email me and i will help you out if i can,

the red and brown wire are the only ones that confuse me really.

i dont know jack about electrical, but it seems wierd that the only wire with direct power goes to the rect/reg, and the brown wire goes to the lights and everything...
should i change it so that the red wire splits after the key, and goes to the lights also? rather tha, have the brown go to them?

i read that a few people were removing the bolt that hold the alternator, and replacing them with nylon bolts, so that the alt isn't grounded or something?

can someone tell me more about this? do you only need to do it with pamco ignition or something?

a CDI is a capacitive discharge ignition,,,those schematics on those will really blow your mind,,an the little black box beside the alternator, is the TCI pick up...or brushes,,some call it a trigger

look at section8joes, schematic,,,youll notice,, only a 20amp fuse is comin from the + side of the battery,,thats all youll need,,,your schematic wont work correctly with those fuses inline between these componets,,an the brown (BR) goes to the ignition pole on your switch,,al your lites, etc run off the red.., better understanding why,,youll hav to get into some electronic engineering..

                      thanks HWC.

i wired the bike yesterday with this schematic

it started up the first couple kicks which was good, so i took it off the stand and tried to riding it but only made it a few 100 feet and it died. i checked the voltage on the battery and it was at 7v...

do i need to swap out the alt screws for nylon ones?
should i disconnect the ground (black wire) from the alternator?
i read somewhere about that but i dont know what its for.

                      anyone else see anything wierd?

"do i need to swap out the alt screws for nylon ones? "

no,,thats another problem youll run into later with this marvolous stock yamaha charging system..

"should i disconnect the ground (black wire) from the alternator?"

                        no

" cheked battery and it was at 7v..."

                        7v is pretty much dead...

                        condition of batt,,new,old,stolen,etc??
was the battery fully charged when befor u started the bike?,,a new,, fully charged batt will be 13.5-13.75 v,,

tell me about your generic switch,,poles an such an how u hav it wired...i see u hav no solenoid, kick only correct,no starter??

if your not usin a heavy switch,,itll burn up/go bad quick,,i hav used the ones u see hangin in automotive depts: advance, wally world, auto zone, oriileys, etc,,theyre only 15amps an not very well made,, ,,i bought one once,,,ended up returning it 2 or 3 times befor i got one to work..

i use a 30 amp equipment style ,,not cheap,, $40ish a pop,,,which has 3 little screw type poles,,batt, igni, acc an larger bolt type pole in the middle,,where u would connect your + starter wire if u wanted to ...

                          yeah, no starter, kick only.
the battery was what came in the bike before i chopped it. during the build process, i would put it on the charger every once and a while to keep it fresh.

the ignition is a 3-position generic from lowbrow. seems to work fine, and the other switches shouldn't have to do with charging or anything. the lights turn on fine.

when i tried kicking it after it died, it would start for a second, literally. so i know it is getting spark...

As far as key switchs go, I'm just running a small toggle and having a bunch of issues do you that my switch is bad?

What did everyone use to draw your diagrams with?
                              Thanks.
