Let me clarify this. Some think this is not legit and your entitled to think that. I'm doing this as a present for him. It's a surprise, he has done a lot for me when we were kids. I'm just falling a little short on completing the bike. With the new baby that we just had whatever I have is pretty much going to her. If you can help-great, if you can't-that's cool too.
Looking for a little help for a soon to be vet

Jeez. The OP has been here since 2011. Does he have an awful reputation? You guys would know, I'm just a noob here. Instead of flaming him why not suggest a little proof if you're skeptical? If you truly are trying to help your bro who has served I'd be happy to throw you a few bones. With said proof of course. Fuck,..even if you could get a few "senior" 33ers to vouch for you that would suffice.Comment

Although I am ex RAF so I'm biased........
We found the separate junior and senior enlisted chow halls insufficiently egalitarian, so the young Airmen, self included, borrowed shirts and we had three extra "SSgt Westbrooks" at meals.

Delayed enlistment program is a great way to get a specific job (never go in under a general enlistment contract!) from your list of preferences if it's not immediately open. If you are a gearhead go with aircraft maintenance. I was comm/nav, then crosstrained to jet engine mech, then the flightline part of that was merged with crew chiefs who work on the aircraft as a whole. Do NOT become a cop or work transportation lest ye get stuck in joint ops in the sand box. USAF sand box deployments are comfy and profitable (Combat Zone Tax Exclusion etc). Anyone who whines about deployed USAF living conditions is a little bitch. (Although I had one traumatic day in Desert Storm when the air conditioner in my tent didn't work. The horror....)
You/he can get with me by private message if useful. If he's interested in the medical fields they lead comfy lives and have great civilian employment prospects. Med Group gets the babes, maintenance only by accident...
All my senior NCO and officer buddies did well after retirement, with some choosing to work while others like self are having fun doing their thing. It ain't Full Metal Jacket. Nowadays even young Airmen think the AF is too slack sometimes. If I did it again I'd shoot for wrenching on airlifters or becoming a flying crew chief or loadmaster. Airlifters have program lives longer than the lives of some people who built them. C-130s first flew in the 1950s for example and are still in production. Fixing fighters was fun as fuck though.Comment

My brother is coming home from his 3rd and final tour in the middleast. The dude loves bikes like no one I ever met. I bought a bike to build so he has one to ride when he gets home. He's been dreaming about riding it coast to coast when he gets back and I am trying to make it happen. But, I ran out of money to finish the bike. I recently had a baby girl and she is spending all my money(any parent here can attest to that). I have been trying to sell stuff with any value in Craigslist but not luck. So I set up a gofundme for him. If you can help out that'll be awesome. My brother and all vets deserve anything they want when they get back. So I'm trying to do a little something special for him. Thanks ahead of time. If anyone wants to post the link on their Social media. Feel free. I personally don't have a Facebook/Twitter or whatever else is out there.
Here's the link- gofundme.com/957enwpe
And for schooling, like Farmall said, he can go to a trade school or whatever with that money. In fact, my local university offered a free welding class to vets that covered most processes including TIG, and ended with a cert.Comment

If he originally signed up for the Montgomery GI bill, tell him NOT to change that to the Post 9/11 bill while he's outprocessing! If he keeps his MGIB, he will be able to use that until it runs out, then is able to apply for more months of the Post 9/11 bill (I got like 35 extra months). If he converts to the Post during outprocessing, he won't get the MGIB benefits at all.

Maybe tell us what you need to finish said bike? Is it spare parts, wiring, etc? It is possible to barter with people here. Post some photos of project bike and what you need...Comment

Legit or not, I don't care if the guy is a vet or not- don't give me this "hes fighting for my freedon" George Bush bullshit. Im not that gullible and it sounds less legit when you use that phrase for a go fund me.
Try setting up an ebay account and posting a few classifieds on this site (I got several bites within minutes of parting out my sporty). You'll find plenty of people that are willing to help, but theres a difference between help and charity.
There are so many Vets in this country who are literally struggling to survive. thousands of them, Homelless, Hungry, etc.
two days ago I was taking a rest at a small park on the side of the road (hwy395) in the tiny little town of Lone Pine, CA.
& I spotted two
persons sitting on a park bench, Well the Guy was , His girlfriend was in Her wheelchair, They were Both in their 30's
and both were military Vets with injuries, Homeless, Hungry. Broke My heart, I gave Them some cash, & some granola bars
I had in my back pack & wished them luck, They were trying to get to LA. People like This need Help, & I don't have a problem
throwing a little love their way, But handing out hard earned money to fund somebodies chopper project, Hell with that!
Shit probably half the guys on chop cult could probably use some extra cash for bike parts!!Comment

yep. If I am going to help out a Vet, It will be for reasons other then paying for parts so they can build a motorcycle.

I do the same with a vet. That pan handles by my work. I buy him McDonald's or subway when I can. Like I said I understand if people don't want to help. Everyone has something going on that you or I don't know about. Just doing it for my brother cause he's done a lot for our family growing up and what he's done in the service. That's allComment

Disabled vets who are crippled need to learn to engage the system. If they have TBI, PTS or other cognitive problems which interfere with that then that's an opportunity for others to help point them in the right direction.
There's usually no reason a wheelchair-bound vet shouldn't be getting 90-percent disabilty or more (disability calculations are not cumulative by percentage for each qualifying condition). Disability education and training funds are often a better deal than the G.I. Bill so doing the math is wise.
A major problem is that so many vets refuse to learn how to use what they earned. (It's like trying to get active duty troops to use their education funds even though it helps make rank. Humans are weird sometimes...)
I will always live near at least one large military base. It's MUCH easier to engage that way and the communities have generations of vets living locally.
When I hear from someone they are a vet and not getting what they need, I offer to help educate them but I can't pass out "initiative". Like anywhere else in life, ya gotta wanna.
Of course I ask a few casual questions to filter out the bullshitters. I ask to see a DD-214 or ID card then if not produced ask why they didn't have one. I'd not mind driving 'em to a VA office. Anyone vet or not can do that.

Sad decision. Urban areas without convenient major active duty installations are NOT where to go. They are stunningly expensive to live in which evaporates what little money poor folks may accumulate. DAV and VFW chapters can be useful but again, ya gotta let them know you fucking exist!
Agreed. Where my firehouse we are considered a urban/indingent area and there are a lot of vets there on the streets and we hate it. We have dinner at the firehouse we make everything in bulk and we feed local vets as much as possibleComment

I can just tell from responses that you're probably a really nice guy, but people around here don't take well to this type of shit. Asking people for their hard earned money is not the way to reach your goal. You need to get crafty. This gofuckme shit is no different than begging on the streets. You are the bum, the hobo of the internet. Most people are going to roll the internet window up on your ass as soon as they see you coming. Only difference is that on here, people will tell you how they really feel, where on the street they're afraid you're going to throw fist fulls of shit on their cars. Bottom line is that everyone has something and someone in their lives that could use a chopper, some money, for whatever. I think you might need to pack up your shopping cart full of trash and your sign and move on to the next intersection.
edit: I'd probably donate some parts if you paid shipping.Comment

Also I like your "fistful of shit" comment, made me laugh. Going to try some other things to drum up some money for this project. I'll prob sell some posters from the gysey run/Diablo and born free that I aquired throughout the years. Worst and last thing I will prob do is go sell my pistols that I have to finish this project for my brother. I'm hell bent on giving him this bike.
And thanks for the offer on the parts. I may take you up in itComment
