That's gotta be the case... It's no small feat to notch those hardened gear teeth like that. There would certainly be pump body damage from an event that did that.

Might have been someone reusing what they had. Lotta backyard rebuilds back when those engines weren't valuable and the owners had to get to work.

That might have been the prettiest piece of a wrecked donor pump. Shit happens.

The ditch was for top end oil return on the 48 to 52 year models ..
We have a whole new ballgame for oil return now, so a bit of filling went down on the case ...

The jugs have the return holes in them as in the 53-up jugs ...
Being the motor is a stroker they have been lowered ...

The new left case will need to be drilled for this new oil path when the time comes ...

The 52 ^^ with the holes drilled for strokers ...

Those back in the day TRW pistons ^^ came with Teflon wrist pin buttons ...
I'm having "Ron Axtell" make up some for the 52 motor which came with wire locks ..

Speaking of the 48 EL ...
Got a sack full of parts coming in Tuesday from VT ..
In that sack of parts are Hasting Molly 0.040" over rings ..
The bore on the jugs are at .030" over the std bore of 3-7/16" ..
By having that .010" more than the size of what the bore is at will allow me to custom fit the ring gaps to my liking ...
And a fresh hone job on the jug walls will happen ...

Another sack of parts are due to also come in from S&S Cycle ..
In it is a custom made sprocket shaft having the L-81-up communized taper with keyway ... That move will have me breaking down the crank in order to send the left wheel to T&O for machining the taper out to the late taper ..
(Be a good time to up-grade the balance job by matching the recip. weights of the front and rear Rods/Pistons)
Also in that sack are S&S pushrods for 48-52 tappets, what was there in the lifter blocks was the 53-up hyd tappets with solid adapters ... Since we was needing the FL longer pushrods anyways converting back to the 48-52 tappets is a plus due to ease of adjustment ...

I really like those teflon buttons, wish they still used them. Loving this thread!

Tasty! I like the bore/ring fit strategy.

              Confirm upgrading the balance job.

Which traditional exhaust (stock or aftermarket) is the least shitty? Stainless preferred but can Cerakote a black set if required.

We can go a step further with the rings that are on there way to my greasy hands ...
I can pull the second compression rings from that ring set and send em to Total Seal in Az. for having em made into "Gapless" ...

The 92" 1952 motor will have it's second rings converted to Gapless ...
Hadn't got around to boxing them up yet, but sure would be great timing to add another set in the box ...

How much for the conversion? Others may be interested too.

Bout a buck and a quarter .... If they hasn't gone up ??
Been awhile since the last set they did for me ...
Do think that was on Jeremy's 51 ...

If you do decide to go with the mod, it'll make three sets that will be shipped ..
                    I'm sending my rings for my 52 that's getting 80" Shovel jugs installed ... They are 3-1/2 + .020" over ...
Did a deburr and some welding to em in order for the powder-coat to lay down nice .. They kinda look like they was CNC-ed now ...

                    Photo in a short

Also they was machined for the poor-boy fire-ring step ...

Might as well go "whole hog" as I'd like to see how well they work.

                      Send 'em.

I left the casting numbers on em, just to show that they are the real McCoy ...

Good photo ^^ showing the fire ring step ... That will allow for a bit more crush on a fire-ring head gasket ...
Works super well when Hi-Compression is in the picture .. I'm running 9.1:1 ... Not a real big need for it, but I was in the mode of doing at the time, so it got done ...

Lathes and the right fixtures are handy so why not?

What's your preferred head gasket? I'll need two complete engine sets worth of gaskets and seals (presumably put together from various sources) one of which you'll use on the engine and the other as bench stock.

Taking .003" to .004" off the top leaving .125" which is the same width of the James metal fire ring built into there gaskets.

S&S does this on all their Shovel jugs, not sure if I got the idea from them or they got the idea from me .. ??
