View Full Version : HOW TO: Make a set of MX style pegs

10-26-2013, 8:37 PM
I've had this idea floating around my head for a while and this finally gave me the kick in the ass to do it. MX pegs are sick. Paying 150 bucks for them isnt. Here's how to make a DIY set.

Start with a pair of oem harley pegs. Cut the rubber off with a razor then cut off the little ball end.

<a href="http://s669.photobucket.com/user/ThrashNvrDies/media/2013-10-23_15-23-42_137_zps36f6ac2c.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/ThrashNvrDies/2013-10-23_15-23-42_137_zps36f6ac2c.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2013-10-23_15-23-42_137_zps36f6ac2c.jpg"/></a>

<a href="http://s669.photobucket.com/user/ThrashNvrDies/media/2013-10-23_15-24-52_733_zps2981ad01.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/ThrashNvrDies/2013-10-23_15-24-52_733_zps2981ad01.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2013-10-23_15-24-52_733_zps2981ad01.jpg"/></a>

Now grab your self a piece of 1/8" (or whatever thickness you like) plate. Then decide how think you want your pegs. I went 1 1/4". Scribe a line that distance along the edge of the steel. Next i drilled 5/16 holes on 1/2'' centers. 18 inches of holes worked for me. 18'' will give you 36 inches of material. I wanted my pegs big because I wear work boots all day and I have large feet. If you wear size 9 vans or whatever the cool kids wear now, you might not need as much.

<a href="http://s669.photobucket.com/user/ThrashNvrDies/media/2013-10-23_15-15-45_101_zps746a1524.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/ThrashNvrDies/2013-10-23_15-15-45_101_zps746a1524.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2013-10-23_15-15-45_101_zps746a1524.jpg"/></a>

Now cut along the line you made. You should be cutting your holes in half. You will end up with some thing like this

<a href="http://s669.photobucket.com/user/ThrashNvrDies/media/2013-10-23_15-36-38_945_zps7bf1eaa5.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/ThrashNvrDies/2013-10-23_15-36-38_945_zps7bf1eaa5.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2013-10-23_15-36-38_945_zps7bf1eaa5.jpg"/></a>

now insert your piece into your handy bending device and bend a 90.

<a href="http://s669.photobucket.com/user/ThrashNvrDies/media/2013-10-23_16-00-35_889_zpsf46e2f3c.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/ThrashNvrDies/2013-10-23_16-00-35_889_zpsf46e2f3c.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2013-10-23_16-00-35_889_zpsf46e2f3c.jpg"/></a>

Install your radii bending attachment into your bending device and bend the steel around back to the other end of your 90. See where im going with this?

<a href="http://s669.photobucket.com/user/ThrashNvrDies/media/2013-10-23_16-02-37_31_zps03a93129.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/ThrashNvrDies/2013-10-23_16-02-37_31_zps03a93129.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2013-10-23_16-02-37_31_zps03a93129.jpg"/></a>

<a href="http://s669.photobucket.com/user/ThrashNvrDies/media/2013-10-23_15-53-44_207_zps964c759b.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/ThrashNvrDies/2013-10-23_15-53-44_207_zps964c759b.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2013-10-23_15-53-44_207_zps964c759b.jpg"/></a>

Weld that shit.

Now drill a hole in the back of the peg the size of the eng of the oem peg. 5/8'' probably.

<a href="http://s669.photobucket.com/user/ThrashNvrDies/media/2013-10-26_15-50-24_304_zps7d838e3a.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/ThrashNvrDies/2013-10-26_15-50-24_304_zps7d838e3a.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2013-10-26_15-50-24_304_zps7d838e3a.jpg"/></a>

Cut a small piece of your steel to span the width of the peg and insert the oem peg like this.

<a href="http://s669.photobucket.com/user/ThrashNvrDies/media/2013-10-26_17-58-18_484_zps5db40f73.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv59/ThrashNvrDies/2013-10-26_17-58-18_484_zps5db40f73.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2013-10-26_17-58-18_484_zps5db40f73.jpg"/></a>

Make sure you have the angle you want. Weld THAT shit. I should note that the oem peg is cast while yours is probably mild steel. They dont mix well. Use nickle rod and make sure you dont get the cast hot or your welds will just crack. If you hear a tinkling sould after you weld its stress factures inside the weld. You dont want that. If you dont think you can do this use a different peg as your base. Or drill and tap the peg and simply bolt on your monstrosity.

Bevel the ends if'in you like. Repeat the process with the other half of the holes.

Give it a quick coat of powder and your good to go. Style on the cheap.

Can you elaborate on how you bent the pegs into a u shape?

I'm sure it was a combination of muscle, elbow grease, and some swearing while using some sort of leverage device to move the metal into the desired placement.

Wow!! That's just cool !

So far I love mine and I even picked up some spare stock pegs to make a matching set for my passenger pegs.

I didn't use an old set of pegs, instead I just cut and drilled some half inch steel. I don't have a powder coat kit, so I just dipped the final product in some truck bed liner material for a rubberized peg type look.

Great thread! Who the hell wants to pay $100+ for a set of footpegs? I may have to give it a shot and make a set.

Cool drill use!

08-28-2015, 10:44 PM
This is all pretty awesome. A lot of good replicas as well. Now if I could only get myself what I need to attempt a set.

Definitely a bad ass idea! Im going to do a knock off set a little different on the factory floorboard brackets for my yamaha roadstar bobber build.
