list threads - idea for shit list, cupping balls, instagram, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

I know that this came up before but I think I came up with a fairly simple solution to list the shit list, ball cupping, list thread entries all in an easy page that would more or less be self managed.

Basically WGET all pages of a thread and GREP for a special character. Instruct new posts on thread to use the special character in front of the list item/person.

I wanted to list instagram users from the instagram thread for myself. In that thread by the nature of the instagram user thing the users have @ in front of them. There is no reason that we could not do the exact same thing with the other list threads.

So the shit list might need to look like this:

"You don't trust #DATROBBERBOBBERMAN he has not returned my house keys and doesn't call me any more"

WGET all the text. GREP out the special character. It would be even easier if the special character and list item were on their own line.
Save to list and over write old list.


What do you think? I can proof of concept this as I am doing it with the instagram thread anyway.

ok so the instagram thread to list seems to work pretty well. I got what I wanted.
If the site overlords want the same for the other list threads then some work will be required. You tell me if this is worth it or not.



Here is what I recommend for the other list threads:

Go back and edit the posts so that the list item (the balls who are cupped or the shit list person being complained about) is on a separate line and it is appended with a special character or format.
Something like this:

(format)
WHO: greatseller

or

(special character #)
#greatseller was great


So go back and edit posts to contain same structure and then require that structure going forward.

Yes, going back through a bunch of posts will take some time to clean up. If you want me to do this I will be glad to do it myself. Not sure if there is a way to allow me to only have edit rights to specific threads but I though I'd throw out the offer.

I guess you could make the structure requirement for all further entries and I could manually list the existing ones. You tell me. Like I said I'm good with just the instagram list and thought it might be beneficial to do the same with other threads.

I'll drop this idea unless I get any other super badass ideas or direction for ye olde site masters.

I get what you're suggesting; but the two searches do the same thing by key word. The search box on the right searches site wide, the search on the left; the forum you happen to be in.

Yeah, you'll get all of the results with that keyword in that forum, and a special character combined would just return those results. But so would adding the keyword and ballcupping, shitlist or instagram in the search box to narrows results to what you want.

If everything gets tagged with a # or whatever character in front that will eventually bring back the same plethora of un-categorized results, now with another character added to the search wouldn't it?

I do the same thing when editing posts in the Japanese section by editing the title content... if it's a How To, Tech, Help and also adding the bike model... to make searches more efficient.

So if someone in the Japanese section is having problems with their CB750 carb all the have to search for is: Help CB750 carb and all the help for that springs back in the results.

I suppose this is an HTML script with a tag you're talking about adding to improve the bolean search? It's been several years since I really wrote page coding that was in the Myspace days. So I've forgotten a lot and haven't looked into improvements since, though HTML 5 from what I hear is going to pave the way for some good things in the not too distant future.

As I was going through the cupping balls and shit list threads I had another thought, it the user was just named in the title of the post then filtering would be easy too.

ex post would be like:

post# 4138 Title: Lowbrow

Post: Lowbrow is great fast shipping, would def order again


I get that you can use the search and narrow it down to a thread and/or a user. Maybe that is good enough.
My thought was to have a single page that would auto-update and display all in one page. It should be fairly simple to script it up in PHP and sticky the page or something.

you know... Once the list is generated it can be used for a "sellers rating" type set up.
The script could sum the number of occurrences where a name occurred and reflect that within the user's profile. Throw a small icon next to the users who are positively listed over ten unique times or something. Negative icon for the shit list repeat offenders. at the least another tab in the profiles with the feedback counts would be fairly simple.

Not trying to kill anyone with a wall of text here, but maybe shit can the two shit/balls threads and make one new one. Roll it out like a site improvement or something. Here is a NEW seller feedback thread. In the title of your post put a + or - and the user's name. In the post make your case.

The script would count up each post as a plus or minus 1. The totals per user would be displayed on the user profile, icon or no.

My reply isn't anything special; I'm just another member with a couple of extra buttons, that volunteers to clean, try and help people out with cycle issues, and keep the peace.

Beyond that nothing else really goes on that I am aware of... so I didn't mean to get any implementation of your idea's hopes up. I was just curious as to what all this work and listing you have been doing and suggesting was all about.
