Hardened steel is hard to cut! In hindsight, leaving the bearing shell and cutting the sprocket might be a better solution. You can see the Yamaha XS sprocket I plan to use. Its pretty hard to cut too. (34 tooth)

Since you've strutted yours into a rigid, go with a 1/4" at the tightest spot. As in put the wheel in the air and spin it till you find that spot on your chain w/the most tension.
