The Daily: Pangea Pulverizer XS650

At an age when most other guys are content to chase pimple-faced tail or play beer pong with their frat buddies, Andy Carter of Pangea Speed churns out custom motorcycle partslike a seasoned vet in the chopper trenches. This 23-year-old progeny from a family of industrial designers and fabricators first drew attention to his craft by building the bike you see here. Andy's Yamaha XS650 is brimming with details you won't find on custom bikes of significantly higher pedigree.

Name: Andy Carter

Owner name, location:andy carter, salt lake city utah!
Bike name: pangea pulverizer
Engine, year and make, model, modifications: the engine and front of the frame is an '83 xs650. there are a ton of modifications to the bike, most of it is hand made.
Frame: stock front hoop, with a hand built rear section using pangea axle plates. that wheel base is stock, i liked the porportions of the stock bike and it rode well, if it aint broke dont fix it you know?
Fork: stock fork with shaved legs and a gsxr 750 steering dampener.
Chassis mods: shaved most stock tabs minus engine mounting locations, custom rear section, internal cable and wire routing.
Tire/wheel size and style: 19/16 speed master front with firestone knock off rear.
Favorite thing about this bike: i really like the pangea fork badge that i built the mold for and cast. and i like that i can say i did everything on this bike from chassis fab, to paint, to stitching the goat skin seat cover.
Next modification will be: go through and fix all the little crap so its dialed for love cycles show.
Other mods, accessories, cool parts, etc: i like the hand shaped electrics box, it goes un noticed allot but it really pulls the back end of the bike togeather, and in traditional pangea fashion its super light weight due to the .032in 5052 AL construction. i like the twist in the pipes too, it took a while to wrap my head around how to build that transition. thats the stuff i get stoked on, the tricky little details that make you want to kill your self but when you get it done your super stoked on how it came out.
Any building or riding story or info you'd like to include: hmm, the very first time i rode this bike (aside from 2 loops arounfd the parking lot) i hopped on it and rode 750miles to AZ. i also really love to ride the hell out of her, i tend to ride it more like a moto x bike and less like a chopper. IE: jumps, dirt, skids, doughnuts etc haha!.

Thanks to: my dad big time for allowing me to take over his shop. all my friends that are super suportive, and jessica garcia for hanging out at the shop late at night through this project. also make sure to check out the complete construction of this bike that can be found on my blog atwww.pangeaspeed.com

What does it weigh?

Commented on 2-10-2010 At 06:47 pm

thanks for all the kind words you guys! mike i never started playing beer pong haha! and nobattfxr, i have no idea what it weighs but i know i am a weakling and i have no problem lifting the back end off the ground. the next project is way crazyer and well under way. but its top secret.

i feel bad cause the 650 looks beat..... not your fault josh your pics make it look 500 times better than it actualy did. its just that it was raining like crazy the night before the show and it sat out side hahaha! oh well.

p.s. that exhaust is scrap metal now from my latest jumping escapades. see where it swoops under the frame and bends up at that cross tube? the pipe is almost totally pinched off haha!

This is one of my all-time favorite designs for paint. The use of the stickers in an artistic way is so inexpensive and punk, only your creativity limits you. I am waiting for a DIY on the front Pangea plaque, I know what it's made of from one of Andy's earlier posts but I'd love to see it done step by step.

Can't wait for the next chop from this guy!

tan dawg, i actualy have a bunch of art deco books that i use for my inspiration. art deco styling was very inspirational during the conseption of motorcycles as we know them today so i feel its fitting to incorperate those styling ques into my parts.

sb666 yes its a 2.2 mustang.

Commented on 2-12-2010 At 12:52 pm

Andy~ I guess I shouldn't be surprised! Excellent man- I've always been intrigued by art deco and art novae design elements. I planned to do a bike with these design elements and then I ran across your blog one day and your parts were perfect! I'll be in touch before long man! Keep up the great work- what do you have planned for your next build?

Commented on 2-11-2010 At 09:12 pm

Man that is a killer XS and you turn out some really neat parts! Congrats on the spotlight. As far as art deco goes I hope your next chop doesnt turn out looking like a honda dream... "You meet the nicest people on a honda"
