Inside Choppahead Kustom Cycles

Choppahead Kustom Cycles caters to the next generation by building affordable custom motorcycles and quality motorcycle parts. They’ve also produced three insane DVD’s that showcase their lifestyle. Not this fake made for TV shit, but life as they really live it. You can expect to witness a few 40’s being polished off, apprentices being tortured in the name of fun, chaos and hard-core music in every one. One would think this world doesn’t exist, but I’ve experienced it first-hand. I met the crew from Choppahead Kustom Cycles at the Smoke Out East in 2007. I didn’t know what to expect as it was my first rally. Needless to say, my clothes reeked of burnouts and my liver has never really recovered. It’s really good to see Truth and Jay still at it after all these years. I recently asked them to give us the low down on the shop.

Where is the shop located?

TRUTH: We're now in New Bedford, MA - the figurative and literal armpit of Massachusetts.

Who works in the shop and what are their positions?

TRUTH:  Founder, Co-owner, fabrication, getting back into painting.

JAY: Co-owner, mechanic. painter.

TRUTH: We also have Jay Nooth, who's an employee, and another Jay and Wild Wild Weston who are shop apprentices.

How long have you been in business?

JAY: Eons.

TRUTH: It feels like it. But, around 12-13 years.

What type of bikes do you service?

JAY: Triumph, BSA, Norton.

TRUTH: We also do an occasional Harley build. We're a full service shop for British bikes (service, repair, builds, etc.).

Is there any bike you would decline to work on?

JAY: Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, new Harleys.

TRUTH: We don't do service or repair work on the bikes Jay listed, but we'll do some fab or paint work for them.  We have friends that specialize in Jap and modern HD that we'd refer them to.

How many custom builds do you have in the works?

JAY: Right now we have 11 up coming builds.

TRUTH: Over the years it's steadily increased. It used to be 3-4 at a time, now we're in the 7-10 range at any given time!

Your DVDs "Chopper Animals & Mayhem Machines Vol. 1- 3" are very popular. Do you see another one coming out in the near future?

JAY: That's the rumor.

TRUTH: Volume 4 has been 90% done for about a year! We've just been sitting on it because we've been so fucking busy with builds, parts, merch orders, and the day to day stuff of the shop.

What do you like to do on your days off?

JAY : What's that? We work 7 days a week except Christmas and Thanksgiving. No joke!

TRUTH: And the occasional blizzard day. It's good - keeps us off the streets and out of trouble.

Are there any events in the works for 2014?

TRUTH: We're going to continue to co-sponsor "Full Speed Ahead" the event we help my brother Ryan Packer with. It's a bike/car show on the USS Salem Battleship in Boston.  We've also been pondering a northeast chopper rally/show for a few years now. Maybe this will be the year we get it going. All the other bike shows seem to be great for a couple years then get shitty really quick.

JAY: World domination.

TRUTH: There's that, too. We fell off  "the scene" for a couple years when we bought our building and moved due to constant fighting with the city. That's finally sort of settled, so we've been going at it hard for the last year. And that will continue into 2014 and beyond.

Would you like to thank anyone?

TRUTH/JAY: We'd both like to thank all our supporters, customers, fans, etc. as well as all the industry people that have looked out and supported us over the years (magazines, distributors, etc.). You all know who you are.  Also, the people we work with on a constant basis: Jim Bernier (RIP) - he helped us get started and taught us a lot back in the day. Tom from Goodhues Powdercoat, Gary from Gary's Custom Wheels, Seth & Project Evolution, Don Hutchinson, Bob and Rick at Motortek, Charlie the One-Armed Bandit and Wayne and the fellas at Acme. And finally, to Lisa and Chop Cult for doing this piece!

JAY: My wife and my dad (RIP).

TRUTH: Outside of everyone listed above I'd like to thank my wife for dealing with me (she's a special ed teacher, so that explains how she can do it), my father and my brothers in HF86 and the DMS Crew.

These dudes build real good stuff. Duh.
If I suddenly find myself with a spare suitcase of cash, my first stop would be down to the familial stomping grounds of New Bedford, request a Thunder Rat, buy them beer and stay out of their way whilst they Do Work.
