TECH: Shorten Swing Arm Fender Struts

I've seen it a hundreds times somebody puts a fender cut at the hinge or a front fender on the rear & the just hack saw through the strut, leave a squared off open end and it looks like hell.
Take the 45 minuets and do it right.
This is the third set I've had to do and it's always pretty quick and easy.

I always measure 2 inches for the bend over section you'll cut probably a half inch off before welding but the extra makes it a bit easier to bend.

I use a small Jet bands saw to make the cuts but a hack saw will work fine & that's how I did the first set.

clean up the radius with a file and angle grinder

Vise up and bend using a hammer & I also use an adjustable wrench to straighten out any twisting.
Cut the extra bit and bend it in flush.

Now use your hammer to tap out any kinks in the outside radius. However there is plenty of material and you'll easily be able to shape it perfect post welding.

For my booger thrower mig I turn the heat up and slow the wire down and make a slow gob weld in hopes of not having to chase porosity later.

Take your time, grind, file, sand and you'll never be able to tell they were cut down.
    Ready for Plating or paint.

    Come pick these up Oscar.

Damn it! And I just did it the old fashioned way about two weeks ago. Oh well, great tech, hopefully I can use it next time.

Oh Man, I think the original flight cranks were made better than that & we all know the 3rd generation ones were not. hence all the pedals laying around the street course/flat bottom.

                    Thanks McGoo.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Kim.

To everyone who said when we started that they wanted to help out with this site, this is an example of the best thing you can do–take the time to do a tidy tech thread like this. This is simple but meaningful content that everyone can learn from.

It's going to the Greatest Hits section...
