Default V STAR 650 drive shaft

I have a long time friend who just bought his first bike it's an 01' yamaha V STAR 650. he's rode it all summer & he just called me to say that every time he starts to put it in 1st gear it instantly cuts the motor off...? i said HUH? well i'm the Harley guy but i told him i would look at it & it seems the drive shaft is FUCKED haha, i can move it forward & back it's not even connected to anything! the housing on the rear hub is also broke & missing a few pieces which is replaceable but before i tear into this thing does anyone have any advice or have a schematic? every little input is greatly appreciated , thanks!!

    Default Ouch

here's the problem......! looks like the gear inside the wheel hub part snapped where the driveshaft goes into a sleave type adapter on to another shaft type gear in the hub
anybody know a part source to find the whole assembly? i can't figure out how to just replace that gear shaft or how to get it out of the hub! the manual i had access to doesnt show that you can.... it's like you can replace every part in the whole bastard but that peice, a new one is over 700 bones!

there has been alot about this on Vstar riders, in a few cases, people have been able to get it replaced, or at least the parts from the dealer, with Yamaha paying for it, something to look into. http://www.sloneservices.com/SilverB...Train-Problems here is some info about it.

I don't know for sure but I read about people using 80 something virago rear ends.they were a direct swap and alot stronger from what I remember. I believe I read it on a V-star site when I had my v-star and was looking for other info, but do not remember the exact site.
