      Your bike will survive without the VOES as long as you cap that vacuum port. They are cheap though so i'd replace it and run a line to the vacuum port.
      Unless you have an after-market ignition with a race only/full advance mode then you wouldn't need it anyway.

                    If you read 'wide open throttle' are we not at full tilt advance? When we are cruising, are we not low in the slow poking along we hit some rpm that says return to retard is the on/off hand trying to maintain the speed limit?

                      Here, let me recap the recrap:

                      1. I'm about to set my linear switch to trigger @ 4mmHg.
                      2. I have that screwdriver ready to dial in that factory number. I am about to set the Hg @ 4, watch my VOES switch me on to the linear I watch my ohm meter swing like a wall switch via vacuum.
                      3. I have now tuned my VOES to spec 4mmHg.

                      I have my intake port closed for the VOES hose. I will now time the engine.

                      A. I MUST HAVE THE VOES OUT OF THE 'TIMING BASE-LOOP'
                      B. I see said the two step tuning guide. So, I have to base-time my engine first.
                      C. Sea, seen your. Your timing plate has to time in first. Set the plate in the middle of the slots.
                      D. Then, you find the timing mark for your year. This will be the advance mark.
                      E. Don't get confused with the top dead center mark to time the cam(s). See the difference?
                      F. For fuck sakes. Is that what that shit is all about? So, I time my plate to the dot?
                      G. For go find it on line or search here. Find Hi-4 instructions for your timing marks.
                      H. For hell of a bunch of tuning for two parts but if that is how all this shit has to work.
                      I. Wouldn't complain then.
                      J. am the hose back on the intake nipple. Time the bike one more time.
                      K. You now need to see if the box can time the VOES in.
                      L. Keep the timing light hooked up, shoot it again to the same timing mark;
                      M. You know the VOES is dialed in.
                      N. You know the Box is dialed in.
                      O. You got the timing plate spot on.
                      P. ENISERVED!

                          Here's what little I know. Nobody could explain how the black box functions. So how could they figure out how a VOES would work? So I'd run thru written rants, and things would popup in my head so I could somehow walk thru what I thought was a process. It took years of off and on research figuring out the moves. I read VOES threads and posts, and still they didn't make sense to me. Someone said it was an on/off kind of switch. Well, internal parts wise, you could say the black box does have those two movements. It's more like saying; the parts inside the black box can decipher electrical pulses, measure them in a binary type of computer environment.

                          Then an old friend sent me his tech books and low and behold I became even more puzzled. However, I walked away with the basics more or less. I call it the 'DTT Box.' The letters are arranged in memory, but not in sequence. Those years of research became more like little puzzle pieces coming together. I locked myself into a 'reversengineering' way of figuring out basic computer movements. For example, ROM and RAM. Just think of ROM as if you turn on your computer, your phone, or anything with an integrated chip, a diode, a resistor, and a capacitor on that motherboard, you can't change the parts. Same as saying, you look at microsoft, linux, and you can't change a thing on it when it turns on. So the hard parts on the motherboard are there as a given, and the software is a given = ROM. Back to the hard parts and we now look at the capacitor. This is just an electrical holding place. Whatever value of current passed thru that purple wire, it is captured and held there like the water at the back of the toilet seat. Call this; "Threshold." It is holding so much voltage, the black box speaks binary in numbers and that means, 1's and 0's. Here too means, the proverbial; ON is 1 and OFF is 0. So whoever said; an on/off switch is the VOES, go an kiss my ass on off LOL.

                          The capacitor is holding said value. It is waiting for the "Trigger." That's more or less the handle on the tank of that toilet. The reversenginnering says I am handcuffed to this magnetic movement of the hard parts. E has a tick like say the heart runs in the DTT. That toilet runs in the DTT. That capacitor is going to receive another value; this side of the speed of light. If I pull the handle, 'Trigger' the water to exit said tank/capacitor, this third moment just "Discharged" the value/gal to ground and/or sewer; heart felt, you cannot get away from the basic bowl movement of my lips. So when the crank spins, it sends rpm values so fast, the DTT points to many saved values. But then dumped to ground for the next rpm signal. It's not locked like 'read only memory' is, but this says random is the access number = RAM.

                          DTT = Toilet Flush.
                          DTT = Heart Beat.
                          DTT = Black Box.

                          Enter VOES:

                          Like the skin on a drum, that pulse or sound wave beats out an electrical wave. That's more or less the inside of the VOES. The vacuum tube is about to load that 'wafer.' The number heads up that purple wire into the black box and box converts to binary language. The black wire is the ground. Even though DC is one way, AC goes both ways, purple pings back and forth; being locked into... 'For every action goes the opposite equally.' So key on, zero pressure on the wafer, 14.7 psi is the constant ping. When the bike idles, it's not pulling so hard on the wafer. Enter 10° of advance for easy starting. The bike starts at 0000 =10°.

                          Here is where you can imagine train tracks and switching tracks from N to S or E to W; better known as 'flipflop.' So again, there occurs a switching process in a magnetic way. 1 says I'm magnetized, 0 means I am not magnetized. The next degree in advance is 40°. This happens past around the 2,000 rpm mark. Total advance is 55°. I'll assume the same DTT occurs with the help of the flipflop. There are 3 curves, so this says linear in flow. Each rpm threshold being in linear fashion, we call that; Analog. This means 'many.' So black box speak wise, the input has many numerical inputs from the sensor (VOES). The ignition curve goes Linear, you can't even feel the transition from 40 to 55°. That's basically what the VOES does. It's a sensor with random inputs being sent no matter how steady your throttle hand is, only the wafer knows for sure. It DTT's thousands of times a second. Okay, maybe back in '84 the processor was not some 'Intel Inside.' So hundreds would be more the speed. We run ABS and that maybe hundreds of thousands of toilet flushes a second if you can imagine. So if you breakdown the letters; V is for Variable. That bleeds Analog. Operating means the black box is a basic processing machine. E means; Magnetism: You cannot separate heat from the chemical reaction. S means Sensor. The word switch may have been the nomenclature back then, but it bleeds Sensor a.k.a. Analog.

                          Backup/Fail-Safe/Limp/Code:

                          Here is where the Sensor fails 3 ways;
                          1. Wire out of connector.
                          2. Connector not connected.
                          3. Signal out of spec/short to ground.

                          This is where you are handcuffed to the loss of vacuum; the loss of the purple wire; the loss of the ground wire; and the failure of the wafer inside. If any of these variables are lost, the Sensor no longer sends in the Analog. The input now is the backup system, a fail-safe, a code, or a limp signal. They all mean the same thing. So no matter the vac, wire loss, or short inside the VOES, there is only one signal the binary maths off from. The backup x rpm. In binary speak, 760mmHg is the same number as 14.7psi. That's the limp/fail-safe number used. So the processor meets this threshold at said rpm and flipflops from 10° to 55°. The 40 is lost. The seat of the pants says WOW. The drag biker wants instant advance as if welding the mechanical advancers back in the day, you are handcuffed to the ROM either way. So this is the loophole you only had back in the day. The input now is called Digital; One fucking digit is the input.

                          You cocksucking, motherfucking, open an orifice wider, you gotdamn, ficking flap my floppy balls, who invented dishit?

                              Sensor means many inputs and that means Analog = Many numbers.

                              To diagnose the bike, is the VOES a switch with 3 advance curves or a sensor with many advance curves?

                              No offense but your stating a 'switch' is misleading. The VOES is the beginning of the basic computer bike. If you understood the concepts, you do not need to replace the 'sensor.' Why? The other part of the computer bike is called; 'backup.' Will the bike run safe while in backup mode? Yes. Again, not trying to do anything but get one on the same page, or you'll chase your tail not knowing the basics.
