95 Nighthack 750 project

I've recently acquired a 1995 CB750 Nighthawk and decided to hard tail it. So, I immediately started stripping it down.

Since this is only my second build, there's a few things I'm still sorting out and I'm sure I'll have a few questions. The first build was a fighter, so slightly different beast.
My plan is to drop it down a bit, and get some USD forks on there. Hopefully I can keep the lean angles sufficient for decent cornering. The 929 and 954 have the same size stem bearings, but I'm worried about head tube / stem length. The head tube on Nighthawk is about 8.5" or 9" long. Maybe the stems can be swapped on the lower tree? Or maybe it won't be an issue? IDK
Other things I'm still sorting out: Lights, air filter... well hell most the build is still in development stage in my head, so pretty much everything is up for debate... except the hard tail.

Heres some bikes that are kind of inspiring the build:

teamnaptime's (I think thats his s/n) frame:

along with one of the sickest Savage's I've seen, built by trucker over at CF:

and a couple other bikes I found on google image search:

And this is my results from last build season:

Went from this:

Thanks for the compliments on the fighter. It's a Seca II w/ FZR forks and swingarm / shock setup.

My main reason for the newer CB750 is it's a hell of a lot easier to get a mid 90's bike for a decent price and still have something good to work with. Seems like all the older bikes around here are either rusted to shit or they want a mint for 'em. I had a couple XS bikes but decided they were too far gone and sold 'em. But the Nighthawk and even the Seca II are both basic standards built on 80's technology, so they're not too complicated. And it doesn't look like the Nighthawks frame has changed much... so the hard tail should be pretty straight forward. So it's just sorting out the rest...

if you decide to swap front ends, i may be interested in the stocker. or all the take off parts if the price is right.

you might have a hard time finding 17mm axle plates but i'm sure someone will make'em

hey man, all you have to do is press the 929 stem out, and have a machine shop turn you a new stem the length of your old one. then press it back into the bottom tree.
Thats how most people go the gsxr or pretty much any swap of a new front end onto an older bike.

I don't plan on keeping the wheels, so the 17mm axle plate will be a non-issue. I'm trying to find a set of spoke wheels for it.

I'll let you know about the front end. I'm pretty sure the forks have had something done to them, they feel pretty stiff. Unfortunately the guy I bought it from knew dick about it. What's the right price?

I think my nighthawk stem will press into the 929 triple... or hoping.

I put a mounting plate for the tag under the seat cover. It just seemed like a natural place for it.

Parts coming!

Found a good deal on a fairly complete CBR929rr front end and also a 21" dual flange Harley wheel. I guess next week when the parts get here I'll get to see how fun it'll be to make it all fit.

Just need to find some 25mm bearings for the wheel. Does anybody know if all the newer Harley wheels use a 52mm OD on the bearings? Maybe I should wait 'till the wheel gets here before I buy bearings.

With the shorter front end and the taller wheel, that front end is going to be bad ass!

rear wheel

Found a local guy parting out a wrecked 03 Road King to donate a rear wheel and axle for a reasonable price:

Had a cool MG he had transplanted the motor into.

Did some work today:

I thought about leaving the motor in to prevent the mounts from moving when I hack up the frame, but I need the portability of the bare frame. So I guess I'll be making some braces to run between the motor mounts.

I don't know about all that... I don't make enough money to have kids and support my hobbies.

Looks like I screwed up with the wheel, not going to work easily w/ my front end. It's got the old style 3/4" bearings in it. Don't ever assume anything.

Anyone have a Harley dual flange 2000 up 21" rim they want to trade? This one has new bearings... chrome nice and clean.
