    Panshovel valve adjustment

56 pan with shovel top end. I added a magneto but had to remove the front pushrod and retime. I’ve got it running but I don’t feel it’s dialed in right. Timing is close but I am thinking my valve adjustment based on a pan may be off. Can someone clarify Panshovel valve adjustment and timing.

It's the same for both motors ..
Make sure the tappet is on low cam, slight drag spinning the pushrod with fingers ..

Timing the Mag is easy ...

Interesting. I initially timed to the center of the hole like my cone shovel and didn’t get anything. Then timed to abou 1:00 and it’s running. I guess I will start fresh back at center and recheck all the pushrods.

Joe hunt mag. It’s an old one I’m assuming fixed. But this is my first time messing with a mag so I could be wrong.

The MRA is a revolutionary new device which aids starting by retarding the timing on fixed-position magnetos, helping to turn the infamous kick-backs and spit-backs into starts. EZ Install. When the cap-mounted lever is flipped, the points 'shift' 10 degrees, retarding your timing 20 degrees for starting. The lever is then locked in the advanced position by a rare-earth magnet. You'll love it! The complete kit consists of a new cap and neoprene gasket, a set of points, condenser, and the actuating pieces themselves.

MRA-R is for normal rotation, such as H-D XLCH's (clockwise viewing points cam), see MRA-G for the few models using reverse rotation, such as – G5, YXS, Dual Mag Rear, Horizontal Nose Cone hunt. Fits Morris and all older style (cast type) magnetos.

You might want to get this cap ...

Fixed timing is fine for race engines but otherwise silly since full advance is not just pure annoyance when starting under anything but perfect conditions but to be timed well for starting means the timing can be too retarded for best performance. That slick cap is one way to fix the early mags and drops on for fine tuning at leisure.

The only trouble seems to be finding one other than through w&w that would be 2 weeks out.

I fucking love my Morris Mag on my pan, MM74E. It just works, always starts in a few kicks at most and runs like a champ. Click image for larger version

Thanks for all the input. I think I’ve got it dialed in. Just needed a little more tweaking and patience. I knew I was close but being new to me I was 100% sure, so I thought I’d ask.
