Kick start spring broke on my 65 Panhead
I really need some help, I am restoring my dads original 1965 Panhead. Everything works, except today when I decided to kick start it the outside kick start spring broke. My question is do I need to remove the cover to replace the spring, or can the spring be replaced. If the spring can be replaced could you please tell me how to do it.

Very unusual for that spring to break. Replacement is easy, and only involves removing the pedal and arm assembly from the kick shaft. The spring is anchored to a notch in the kick shaft and can be pried outward to remove. Tap a new spring into the slot, wind it up and hook the end over the round post on the kick cover, and replace the kick arm and pedal. If the spring has a sheet metal cover, you must of course remove and replace that as well, but '65s did not come with a spring cover originally as far as I know.

You have to take the cover off to replace the spring. In those days the shaft was part of the kicker arm.
