Scrape off what wrinkled then soak it again. That must be some bad assed paint. dot 3 usually gets to bare metal over night except for the corners and seams, that you got to scrape and re do.

Do you have access to an electric drill, plug-in or battery? If so, save yourself a lot of headache and at least get some cheap wire wheels for the drill and go at it that way. If that is an epoxy paint on there it will be slow going with chemicals.
Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Lowes, etc all have them for under $10.00.
I did both of my tanks in less then 2 hours with a couple different wire wheelsLast edited by DoomBuggy; 05-01-2022, 9:32 AM.Comment

Doesn't that gouge the metal? The sander i got works pretty quickly but I get those little spiral patterns in the metal. Maybe started with the wrong grit but I'm afraid of making more problems by scratching up the metal.Comment

Those little spirals are OK, your sealer/primer will not only fill them, but it actually grabs a hold in those "grooves". I use 400 grit paper before I do my sealer coat so that the surface is rough enough for the paint to adhere to. If you have too smooth of a surface you could end up with paint failure.
edit: I will go as rough as 80 grit to get rid of rust or old bondo, then use a 200 and finally a 400 before shooting sealer/primer. The fine papers up to 2000 grit are used between clear and buffing. That is when you really want to get rid of your swirls.Last edited by DoomBuggy; 05-01-2022, 10:30 AM.Comment

Paint failure! Thanks! I was thinking I wanted very smooth and then the etching primer would bite down. But that makes sense. Onward!Comment

Thanks! Really appreciate that. I think I started with 600 there (what got the spirals going) but I freaked out and stopped.
If I were to get a wire wheel, what would I start with? I'll definitely need something else to get in the center facing sides of the tanks and all the little groovies.Comment

You just wanted to show off that desert rose! I don't blame you! Haha.
Thanks! I think I have that little brushy one somewhere...
