Shovelhead Hitachi Starter rebuild
I noticed the front cap came right off. I was figuring the cap, bearing and armature would come out as one unit.
A look in the cap shows the bearing spinning in the cap, i can fix this, but is this bearing press fit into the cap in normal practice, or to the armature? Harley discusses only briefly replacing the bearing if bad but does not get into the disassembly if everything was situated correctly.
It also calls out two thrust washers on the commutator end of the armature HD-31584-73 I noticed I had the washers, assuming these are the ones called out as there are no dimensions specified in the parts manual. Mine are two different sizes.
OD .981

The bushing on the end cap is completely shot, but part of the rebuild kit. If they are correct this is somewhat strange. Was their a specific endplay called out for the armature. I find no documentation as such.Last edited by jcrubin; 01-10-2021 at 9:09 PM.
