STD HEADS ON A PANHEAD with a Magneto!? WHO IS RUNNING THEM? GOT QUESTIONS!

    Hey Guys!

Got a set of STD heads on a 56 Panhead that I am trying to figure out more info because STD is no longer in business. They are the STD panhead heads that have the three mounting bolts and are dual plug ones. Problem is that they don't have any plugs and I am at a loss of what spark plugs to use in them? I think they are shovelhead plugs but which ones for what years? Plug numbers would be appreciated. Also looking for guys to give me the low down on these heads. Any good?

    Thanks,
    Jay

The number 4275 ^^ is for the 1/2" reach plugs ..

The 4265 is for the 3/4" reach plugs ...

Hey Dragstew! Thanks for chimming in man! So when it comes to the STD heads should I be using the 1/2 inch reach or the 3/4 reach? Also thanks for sending info on the plugs! Learned a lot about resistor and non resistor plugs! The two plug numbers that you sent don't have the R in the part number so I assume they are non resistor plugs... Is that correct? Speaking of custom wires do you have any suggestions there? Copper core style that could be cut to the correct length?

This head is a re-pop from STD heads ..

It was made to use 3/4" reach plugs, if your heads are machined for the 3/4 reach plugs, by all means use them.

The spark from the Mag needs a easy path to the plugs ...
Copper core wires will do the job really well, no suppression core wires cause they will rob from the spark, same goes for the spark plugs ...

Well that plug thing is good to know. Many times I have been in the bush and smashed plugs with rocks so I could shove in rebar wire and limp home (normally a points bike) they only ran low rpm due to arcing after, but was better than pushing them. My days of hoarding ancient plugs is not over, but I will keep this in mind.

NOT all STD heads have the same threads.
I have two sets of STD heads, On one I use 4265 plugs
& the other STD head has a smaller thread size, & I use the 4165 plug on It.
