    Evo Frame Swap Fitment Questions

    Hey guys,
So I have a '98 FXD that I picked up cheap. Was hoping to swap the motor over into a hardtail frame this winter.
I can see that with the oil pan underneath the transmission, it won't be able to bolt up to anything with a mounting plate. My three biggest questions are-
    1. Will a softail transmission be compatible with the motor? Hoping to do a 5 speed with electric and possibly kick start
    2. Will I need a new inner primary, and if so, will I need a new clutch hub, comp sprocket, etc?
    3. Is it possible to plumb oil lines from an external tank instead of the pan underneath the factory transmission?

    Thanks guys!

Evo motors are all the same in respect to the motor mounts, inner primary face on the case, and output (sprocket) shaft. The oil pump covers vary, because the oil line hookups are slightly different, but that is easy to work around.

Yes, you will need a new inner primary to match a Softail transmission. You can use your existing clutch, compensator, primary chain, and chain shoe assembly. You will have to adjust the spacing of everything outboard of the alternator rotor, but that is also easily done. Your Dyna outer primary cover will fit the Softail inner primary.

You could even swap the transmission internals from the Dyna to a Softail transmission case if you need to.

It's an easy swap all around, go for it.

You may run into a problem with the Evo motor being too tall for fitting into a standard hardtail frame ..
They are about an inch taller than a Pan/Shovel motor ...
Take my 45 and outrun em all ..

Thanks to both you guys for the solid advice.

JB, when you talk about spacing outboard of the rotor, is that something that could be accomplished with a set of shims? Or do you mean I would need a longer primary chain?

Thanks for the heads up Dragstews, may end up raising the neck a bit to accommodate that motor then

The compensator spacing is accomplished with shims. There are instructions included with H-D replacement alternator rotors that detail the differences. Primary chain is the same, as I already stated.
Almost ANY aftermarket rigid frame made since the mid-'80s will fit an evo motor. The H-D rigid pan frames will not allow for an evo motor, and are way too valuable to cut up for the purpose, in my opinion.

Did a Evo engine in a aftermarket rigid frame for a shovel: Rear rockers hit the gvframe Just grinded a little on the frame, no big deal:

It will need the seat post raised ..

If needed I can supply you with a "Edlund" frame that looks just like a stock frame from the 48 to 57 era that has the needed height for Evo motors ...

Really appreciate it Dragstews, definitely interested in the frame but would have to wait a bit for some funds to roll in first

Do you play Lotto ... ??
                    .. Might get lucky ..

A special order frame would cost near 3 grand ..
