After much consultation and discussion I have decided on a direction for the rebuild. She will come back as a period correct bobber with minimal frame alterations but a tasty paint job.

Today I received a batch of shop rags with a brand new Edlund straight leg frame in the middle!


Opening that up I found a beautiful frame complete with the promised Florida patina on it.


Here is the new next to the old, notice the bend between the two arrows on the old frame.


( The old wishbone frame and the sporty gas tank will be selling as a set at some point soon, let me know if you need one )

I measured and compared to my hearts content and so far the only things I have found is that the old frame has a grease nipple on the brake crossover and the new one does not, also the frame is not drilled out for the oil filter mount's bolts. Neither is too hard to remedy.


Next steps are to knock the surface rust off and start assembling and test fitting everything. Need to find a shop that will dip my old fat bobs and weld on a new mounting stud.

On the old frame, I see a crosstube behind the transmission mount that the new one doesn't have - was that added to your old frame?

I had added that to support a chain idler gear. Ended up not needing it.

Reach out to Dragstews for a firm price, it all depends on what you want on there, which tabs, rake, extension, etc.

This one was a bone stock "demo" from his shop and ran me about $2,500 and a little shipping, but again let Jesse give you a figure.

You'll also find that the two holes for the motor's bottom slid plate will need to be drilled ...

Good to know. I picked up a couple of rust and paint removing attachments for my drill. It is makng short work of the Daytona Chrome on there. This thing looks so good I am tempted not to mold it... But of course I will end up doing it anyhow, lol.

I also drilled a few holes for the locating pins on my FX forks. No external stops for me baby.

Worth a thought or two

Been slowly gathering bits and pieces and now have to make at least some build decisions. Let's start with the fact that I will most likely sell the bike when done so I am trying to both build a desirable bike and trying to appease my inner desire to build shit. My first thought is to make this a platform for some nice artwork, but then I think if I do it all black it will appeal to a wide audience as well.

So the first big question is how much molding do I do. The new frame is so pristine I hate like hell to start welding on it, but I am thinking I want to mold in the front half of the seat and then smooth out the weld joints and the neck area. I would shape some round stock to conform to the seat, weld that to the frame ( love the little Eastwood TIG machine I picked up ) and then fiberglass that in to get the final shape.

For the neck I am not sure if I should square it off like Brown Sugar or if I should do a standard round mold job on it.

Next thing is the stance, Brown Sugar was a little up in the front and the 2" longer tubes have made that more pronounced. I am giving serious thought to the 3 degree cups as that will leave me a a little under 6" of trail which should still be a good riding bike AND it will sit closer to level. If I go that route I will square off the neck as I can then match it to the angle of the forks.

Has anyone installed the raked cups? A couple of places sell a set with the cups, new bearing, AND a new post for the lower tree, others do not. What have you used and what was involved in installing them?

PS: The other thing I am trying to figure out is how to properly mount the two light dash. Right now the fit SUCKS! Lots of room between the tank and the dash, not at all a nice fit! Anyone have pics or suggestions? I will try to add some pictures a little later today.
