    89 sportster flywheel bearing allignment

    Hello guys

I'm restoring a 1989 sportster engine. I replaced the pinion shaft outer race due to excessive wear. According to the buell shop manual I should allign and lap the new race. Is that required for real? Anyone had experience with this stuff?

    Thank you so much!

This vid shows how that job is done ...

You said you're using a Buell Manual ...
Does that mean you have a RR-1200 or perhaps a RS Buell .. ??

Very rare Scoots if you have one ...

In 1989 only 34 of the RR-1200's was built ....

7 of the RS Westwind's was built in 89 ...

I have a 92 RS and all the parts to make it a RSS ...

Can go solo or two up with a hour's bit of work ...

          Thank you so much guys!

I don't have a buell, I'm rebuilding a 1989 883, unfortunately the 883 service manual do not include any "how to change pinion shaft outer race" or bearing color chart and the buell service manual actually do it.

I'm pretty downhearted because after some phone calls here in italy there's no machining shop that is going to do it for me and the HD tool is way too expensive.

Do you have the Harley-Davidson "Shop-Manual" for your 1989 Sportster (?)........if not, this should be available to view on the "web".
You can also do a search for videos of "Replacing the Sportster Pinion Outer-Race".....and "Line-Lapping HD Sportster Engine-Cases".

If you have access to a "machine shop"....or someone with a lathe.......you can make a Pinion-race press-plug-tool as the size/shape is in the Shop-Manual.

Last....depending on where in Italy you are located, Harley-Davidson-International should be able to provide you with locations for HD shops near you..........worst-case would be to have to remove the engine-cases/flywheels and ship them up to Germany to a Harley shop for the work.
            It's all doable.

              Update

There's no single HD dealer in italy that would be able to do this job. Luckily I have found a small vintage HD shop in Como that is specialized in this kind of jobs. Brought to them the cases and the flywheel, waiting until christmas. I'm so happy!

              Thank you guys

If you don't know about the xlforum, spend some time there. It's easily the best Sportster and Buell internet resource.
