I cleaned up the lines and set the tanks on the frame so I could get some reference lines on the neck and the seat area. I was able to match the gold leaf pretty darn close with a heavy metallic paint so the neck will get that rather then try to put leaf on the curves around the neck.
It is too damn cold to paint today and I have to let the sizing on the tank cure for three days before I top coat it with clear. So I think this would be a good clean the shop day.Last edited by DoomBuggy; 02-14-2022, 1:38 PM.Comment

Played around a bit and got the color on the seat area. Will add a touch of the gold in a few days.
Edit Wednesday: I added a little gold trim just to match the leaf on the tank. Then I buried the "art" in three coats of interclear. Tomorrow I will give it a wet sand to level it out, check the alignment of all my lines and if everything is good I might even be able to shoot the final clear on it. Then I can switch between painting the tins and assembly as things dry.

One step forward, one step back
Well then, things were going along swimmingly and then...
Looks like I skipped a step on the gold ! ! ! !
With lacquer you can shoot clear over gold leaf as long as you do a light "dust" coat and then a wet coat after that tacks up. Well with the new paints it turns out that once I got the turning the way I wanted I SHOULD have given it an overcoat of sizing and let that cure BEFORE I started putting intercoat over it. It now looks like SHIT, arghhhhhhh.
Fortunately I have enough leaf to do it again, but damn that's a pisser. Hope someone learns from that mistake. On the bright side it gives me a chance to get my turning up to a 9.5 or better, lol.
Also on the plus side the frame is ready to put the show clear on it. I just need to wait for a slightly warmer day.Last edited by DoomBuggy; 02-17-2022, 11:28 AM.Comment

One small step for me, one giant step toward completion.
The frame is done, because I color sand the interclear between coats I already had a nice flat surface. The top coat flowed like glass and I don't even think I will need to buff this frame!!!! No runs, no muss, no fuss. The only concern will be any dust settling on the top areas. I've been running a dust filter ( this is my woodshop as well as paint booth), so the air should be pretty clean, we will see.
I will let this hang for a couple of days and then get it on the assembly table, oh joy of joys!
Meanwhile I am back to retesting my leaf work, I will try a few longer times on my test panels to see if that helps a little. I am also going to use a cotton ball rather than a piece of velour to do the turning, it is a little less intense in the swirl. The issue I was getting, besides the lifting, was some of the turning looked more like scratches then nice clean machine work.
Edit: On another note, I have two oil tanks. One is painted with a center fill spout the other is chrome with a side fill. The painted one is a pain in the ass as you need to flip the seat to get at the filler. The chrome one is nice and shiny and I am starting to think this bike might look better with another shiny piece on it. Thoughts?Last edited by DoomBuggy; 02-18-2022, 11:23 AM.Comment

Good day so far, finished straightening out the garage a little. Feels like I have room to work again.
The frame has a couple of dust snots on the seat area. Not horrible, but I will notice, so tomorrow I can lightly buff that area and the top of the legs. Then the second son can come over and give me a hand putting the motor in.
Figured I best clean the motor before I put it in, so I spent a day on a stool cleaning and polishing away. I think she is ready.
Edit: I hit the seat area with 2000 grit and then some rough cut compound on my little Harbor Freight buffer and it looked so damn good I did the rest of the frame, lol.
I am out of final cut so I will pick some up this afternoon and hit it with that.
Also decided I needed to put some nice, shiny bolts and a chrome 90 degree fitting on the oil pump so need to wait for that to show up, stupid 1/4-24 threads!!!!Last edited by DoomBuggy; 02-20-2022, 12:23 PM.Comment

Still moving forward. I have been fitting everything back together to get the pan for the p-pad trimmed. Now I need to see what the folks at Hard Luck Design can do for me, really looking forward to it.
I'm happy with the tank, just need to add the HD logo and a little detail in the tan area. Then I need to decide on the fenders, they look a bit chubby with that much of the tan showing. I also need to figure out one of the "S&S" oil lines, damn thing is just a bit too long! Other than that assembly is going quite smoothly.
Jesse, I am digging the 3 degree cups with 2" over tubes, look is just about where I wanted it, thanks for the suggestion!

That saved some work n paint! Although a mouse trap in paint would be way different specialy with Phoenix or Brown Sugar on there.
