Valve spring question

I have a new set of andrews high lift valve springs, my question is can i run these with my stock harley H cam?

79 shovelhead 80” engine

will the stock cam lift them?
to much spring pressure?

stock springs with stock cam or run the new springs and buy a cam, i’m cheap

Yes, but you need not run the "high lift" top collars. You can use the stock H-D top collars, because you do not need the extra spring travel. If you use the collars pictured, you MUST provide clearance in the rocker boxes, by grinding away material from the inside, just above the gasket surface. Do not grind all the way to the gasket surface, leave it intact (that mistake was made many times in the old days).

thank you for the solution, from this photo the difference is clear in the top collars.
I’ll put the original collars in with some peace of mind.

For the other readers, and the newbies:

That solution is possible because the stock springs and the Andrews springs have the same coil bind measurement. And I know this for a fact, having used dozens of sets of each. I would not recommend the above if I did not know the particulars for certain. The Andrews springs have greater pressure across the board, both seat pressure and open pressure, but work fine with the stock cam and hydraulic tappets. They are inexpensive insurance for old shovel (or pan) heads.

i put a set of the stock collars in, also have a picture of the harley springs next to the andrews spring, really just the inner spring seems to be larger, anyway i appreciate the advice i’m taking it running an engine with it

No need with the stock cam, and those particular springs. That was the point of my answer.

Yes, any non-stock cam, measure everything and leave nothing to chance. On pans and shovels, this admonition includes the so-called bolt-in cams.

the guides on this one are not the fat ones, took some measuring and reaming to fit the new set. did some reading and 79 was an odd year for the size of these valve guides

What you most likely have is the mid-year changeover ..

1948 to 78 was same guide O.D.
79 to 84 was the "Fat" guide years ..
