Default Running only rear turn signals?

What’s the trick to this on a 96 custom. Obviously just unplugging the fronts causes the rears to not blink. Thanks a lot!

Gotta have enough resistance load to get the flasher to work (whether mechanical or electronic). Or get a flasher or turn signal module that is not load sensitive (both are available).

In 1996 HD introduced a new model of Sportster called the Custom, designated XL883C and XL1200C. These had a solid wheel in the rear and a 21" wheel in the front, a bottom mounted headlight, Drag bars with tall enclosed risers with the idiot lights in the top clamp, floating rotors, and starting in '97 (I think) forward controls. I'm guessing this is what Massyamaha is talking about, although it never hurts (and always helps) to be as specific as possible.

The flashing of the turn signals is controlled by a module, which also controls the 4 ways and the self canceling feature. It more complex (and much more expensive) than a flasher. It's wired into the speedometer circuit as well as the turn signals.

The simplest way to get the rear only signals to flash it to do it manually. Just keep pushing the button every half second or so. The best way is to buy an aftermarket part called a load equalizer. Most of the big aftermarket parts houses (drag, JP, etc) will have it, or better yet your local indy shop can get it for you. You wire this into your turn signal circuitry (it should come with instructions, if not I'm sure you can find some on the net.) and it fools the module into thinking there's a proper load on it and it will flash and cancel. Guys also use this to switch to LED turn signals which don't pull much of an amperage load.
