    Default Build Thread: 1982 Shovelhead

    Today we have here a tale of total, utterr bullshit and mayhem.

    I was able to acquire a decade+ dormant 1982 FXE Super Glide.
    Exciting stuff really, already went thru an Evo Sportster, Twin Cam and now I got my muppety ass hands on a Shovelhead? BAD. ASS.

    I didnít know shit about fuck when it came to shovelheads, but after the two years it took me to self teach about all the shit on my Sportster....I wasnít scared of this thing, thrilled, really.

    Magically and with some basic effort I was able to get that SOB started and running in a short afternoon.
    Big WOW.

    Then it had to sit on the back burner for a while.

    Things changed, other bikes got moved, priorities opened up and finally the time for the Shovel was here.
    I managed to pick up an aftermarket frame.

    Welding a hardtail onto my stock frame wasnít an option at the time.
    Started lucking out and finding parts I really wanted to do this build with, collecting as many as I could.

    The Square stock trident sissy bar became a very big favorite for me.
    After a couple days of poking around, a random local man had a narrow frisco tank never used, primed and going for basically nothing and a Paughco oil tank with the built in filter mount on the side. Click image for larger version.

    At the beginning of May I was able to start tearing into this bike again, ecstatic.
    I didn’t have time to pout about loosing my garage and having to be on someone else’s time, I could work on it again.
    That’s all that truly mattered.

    Upon disassembling up my clutch basket...OH WOW. My steel plates where completely pitted and my friction plates caked in what I can only describe as Red Mississippi Mud.
    Completely forget to snap a photo of that disaster.

    Does aftermarket frame have title or what is the plan? I always ask because title problems are VERY common and title passes with frame on cone Shovels.

    If you can manage a title without losing title to your more valuable stock frame that's ideal and there are a variety of ways to do that.

    The stock parts should Ebay easily.

    Farmall my game-changer, you seriously saved the day and look I even started logging in this Build like you suggested.

    No, the aftermarket frame does not have a title only the MSO and of course this bike is like many old ones, the title has gone missing but the numbers are clean.
    So, I plan to get that all squared away, I want to keep the stock frame and motor married, because in the future I want to get the Shovelhead back into its original frame once I have gotten a hold of a title second motor.

    I know that in Ohio I can go to court, show them a vin check, pay for a bunch of documents to be sent out(like $300) and when they come back clean and unclaimed, I will be issued a replacement title. What other ways are there?

    Look into Vermont’s no title and registration loophole. They allow non residents to mail in a bill of sale and (other required docs) and they will issue a title. Once you get the Vermont title you can transfer it to whatever state your in.

    I’m not an expert on this but I did some research on it while I was in the market for a shovel. One of them didn’t have a title. A better deal came up so I didn’t have to go that route.

    Problem with the Vermont route is that it saves me no money at all and seems to have a lot more potential for holes in the plan.
    But thanks for the mention, I had also been looking a lot into it.
