Default Super E and Small Air Cleaners

    How do ya’ll do it?

Installed one of these on my 77 Sportster

Pretty popular air cleaner setup it seems. Gasbox and TC Bros make similar setups.

Bike ran fine with the Teardrop air cleaner but I was seeking to change it up. Installed the cleaner. Installed a proper support bracket and removed the bowl vent plug since this style cleaner setup covers the open port.

Bike runs like CRAP! Can’t even get it down the road. Thing is starving for air.

It is pretty obvious as to why. Very small diameter compounded by only a few small louvers.

How does everyone get by with these? Am I missing something? I fiddled with my mixture needle a bit but no luck.

I think to run such a setup you would need the filter to be completely exposed such as this one:

Just fitted a TC Bros to my 93 cube stroker engine, S&S E carb, no issues.
Starts and runs fine. Is your vent hole open with the backing plate fitted.

No it is blocked but I did remove the additional allen plug to allow for proper ventilation.

Couple of pics showing carb without filter on and then without backing plate may help.
On mine, the vent hole is open on the carb face, and the backing plate is machined and slotted to match up and allow venting inside the filterd area.

I had the exact same problem with mine. So I put the teardrop back on and it runs as it should. Now the backing plate from TC Bros does have the hole and its slotted but Im also thinking that maybe if I drill the slot out itll help. But since my scoot is running great right now Id rather ride than mess with it.

Have you looked into your jetting? I run a pretty tiny one too from TC Bros on my ironhead. when I first put it on, it ran like shit as well, but I discovered that it was jetted far too rich from the PO since he put a stupid fucking hypercharger on.

I wound up yanking, rebuilding, and re-jetting back to the spec in the manual (.031 intermediate/.076 main) and it runs like a top.

Bike is long gone. I gave that small air cleaner to a friend with an Evo sportster. It too ran like shit with it. Ended up in the trash.
