Starting to look at the wiring. Anyone have a barebones schematic for the kz? Looking like charging system, starter relay, ignition switch, hot and trigger for coils. Key on hot for tail and headlight(high beam only, no switch). Oh and brake switch.

A previous owner had hacked the wiring. My buddy who I got it from had to add back a turn n tail to pass inspection. His work is good but the combination of the 2 was overwhelming.

What I have left.



On the left is a Volvo relay that I think is/was being used to run coils, headlight and exciter(?). Thinking it will go away also!

It has a 630 on it. The frame is a cb750 roller. It has a 530 rear sprocket already on it. Figured I’d go to 530 front as I have bulk chain and a front sprocket is cheaper than a rear. The stock kz wheels are mags with disc which runs a different style sprocket, or I would have swapped rears.

Well I take that back. The rear sprockets can and would swap. Since I already ordered I’ll go with the 530.

Scored a tank! Swapped a homie for a nice handforged knife, and a future trade when I need something else.

Ok I admit I hate wiring and am not that great at it. I’ve got the essentials broke down and off the bracket.

The basic diagram trinortchopz shared.


So from what I see the black n white wires from stator(in simple schematic) are the blue w/red and light green w/red coming out of blue plug(from stator). Correct?


Only other things I’m not sure about are the black and brown wires out of regulator.

Figured out the blue and green wires. Oil and neutral light senders! DOH! Sometimes I impress myself.

Been hoping to make a trip to local(ish) steel yard but they ain’t selling to non-essentials!!!
This crap is out of hand!
Anyhow I decided to use what I have and think outside my box. Back to that piece of aluminum remnant and took a slice off. 27” was barley enough length but it ended up working out. I bent it to shape with a Polly mallet, a stump and a 2x4(visible in pics). Thinking I might add a few speed holes after I get fender mounts set. I’ll go tomorrow and see if we’re still allowed to buy bolts/hardware!?!

Couple more small steps yesterday. The new throttle came. I couldn’t find it polished so I got a black one(2 actually) and used the old aircraft stripper, wire wheel and buffer. It’s shiny now.






While I was polishing I figured I’d hit the sprocket cover. It got a little bit trimmed off back to make it have a smooth radius. The 530 conversion sprocket says it will be delivered today! Then on with it, the cover and a chain!




I’ve been waiting to fab the center motor mounts until I can verify that the chain lines up and rolls smooth. String line says it fine but I hate grinding fresh welds!
Think I have the wiring figure out enough to test with a batterie. Planning to run a self-resetting circuit breaker from a Harley. Then split off with separate twist lock glass fuses for ignition and lights. I need to get a new batterie tho and that might be a bit. Can snag one out of the Honda till then. Really wish my electronics homie didn’t move to Colorado!!! Got spoiled not having to worry bout wiring crap. But I’m learning.

Im currently leaning towards a center stand vs std kick stand. The amen stand don’t fit with the kz exhaust(if I had the $ I’d buy a 4into1 and it would solve it), the stand on the kz is made to go over the exhaust but is big and hideous! The center stand is from my 82 cb750. It looks like it will fit with an added crossmember. Not the purdiest but not to horrible. Plus I can mount the batterie down there and help hide it...

No sooner did I type it and sprocket showed up. Made quick work of installing it an cover. The rear fender needs to go up about an inch for clearance, otherwise we’re golden!

Got on a bit of a roll!

Started on the faux oil bag aka electronics box. Made from 8” of 4” exhaust tube. Capped the end with sheet metal. I learned a trick awhile back. Putting a slight radius on the end of 4” tube to decrease the I.d. slightly. I do this with a T dolly(basically any 1/2-3/4” solid round with a ball end ground into it). Give it a bit of a brake there vs hard corners Just makes it a bit more pleasing to the eye.
The end caps will get an ignition switch(key), a protected toggle(start) and 2r3 twist lock glass fuse holders.
Still need to make lower mounts for it...









Started a seat pan. Will get a bit of a back rest and end short of carrying a passenger.

Made some brackets for the center stand. Had to cut it way down. Will need new pads attached to bottom and the deployment leaver(foot thing) welded back on. At least it’s standing on its own again! The exhaust chambers that were welded on were in my way. Since I already planned to axe them...well they are gone!

Took a few days off this project. Getting rolling again...

Mounted the start switch and a couple fixed holders to the electrical box. Need to pick up a new key switch battery and some electrical supplies.
Thought I had a Pringle petcock laying around, guess I’ll have to dig deeper...
