Had that happen once when the starter button on the bars didn't fully release. Worth a look?

Ya might have a bearing trying to lock up ...

If so, it will be doing damage to it's counter parts ...

After taking primary cover off what should I look for?

inspect all the bearings, primary chain, shoe, you might need to dig deeper in order to eyeball the clutch basket bearing, spin the tranny clutch gear and see it it feels rough ... May find the trap-door bearing bad ...

Think I'd slide the generator out and give it a quick start. It has that sound they get when the generator bolts are loose. So it might be a bearing dropping the armature out of line.
