Converting Panhead plumber style intake manifold mount to shovel type o-ring style

Question on converting Pan head plumber style intake manifold mounts to shovel type o-ring style:

I have removed the pins that secures to older style plumber intake manifold mounts to my pan cylinder heads:

My question is how do I removes them? It appears they are threaded in the cylinder heads, and all one has to do is screw them out. My problem is how? There is no place to grip them to screw them out so I can screw in the new ones:

Any tips out there on how to remove them?

Warming up the heads with a heat gun will help alot ...



Could do a cut with a carbide Burr where the hole is at to thin out the insert.
Be careful not to get into the threads of the heads ...

That kit in the bottom of your post is exactly the kit Ill be using, but I'm not what we are saying here: Cut out the old threaded insert (careful not to cut the threads in the head) and remove? I'm thinking that's the case since there is no gripping area to screw the old insert out?

There is a special tool to remove them

That tool only installs the Oem nipples ... Dose not remove em ...

Anyone tack a suitable piece of steel to the inside of the nipple (with your welder grounded to the "tool" not the head) for easy leverage? If you have TIG that could work nicely.

Could run a bead around the inside of the nipple to shrink it ...

I was wondering the same thing, you could tac a piece across and use a crescent wrench and it seems like they would come out pretty easy, may stick the heads in the oven for a bit first though.

Cut some slots in the nipple opposite one another and slide in a piece of square stock , or what ever, to reef on? Some heat would help. Not sure a hole drilled thru both sides of the nipple would work, not very thick there and the rod would be pretty small that you would insert to reef on? But if ya got a welder yea weld on it.

drag I may have the wrong one, but if i remember correctly I removed a set with Johnjzjz on my buddies panhead, maybe he will weigh in on the conversation, he had a tool to remove them i thought it was the same?
